Did You Read What KVD Said?

In its Wheeler patterns 2-5 article, BassFan asked KVD what his “performance edge” was. Now, normally this is a spot for pros to plug their sponsors, nothing wrong with that imo. KVD did that, but added some juicy deets. He said:

The HydroWave was a big factor for me. I was able to trigger a school of bass around me maybe half a dozen times, and when that happens it makes the pickings pretty easy. It also helped me activate the shad and draw them right to me.

What?!

Triggered bass to school?
Drew shad to the boat?
Half a dozen times?
Pickings pretty easy?

Those are HUGE statements.

And Kevin, get…outta…my…head – because that’s what I need, man! (Mostly the “pickings” part.)

The HydroWave is the latest (second?) “fish-activation” device – aka a “fish call” – on the market. The one before that was the Biosonix unit, which KVD also used as did many other top pros.

I’ve been looking into these things for a bit, and will at some point have a series of posts about them. Preliminary report: wow.

The pro circuit is getting too gimmicky. Pit KVD against Roland, Clunn, Parker, et al., of old – without the electronic cheats and you’d level the playing field (IMO). Doubt KVD would be so dominant.

Should these devices be outlawed from the circuit? Or are they just the latest attractant?

I totaly agree with this analysis. That is why I feel you can’t compare KVD’s accomplishments to those of Roland Martin and Rick Clun. To do so is a travisty to those two anglers who definately did not have the advantage of today’s electronics, rods, reels, line, lures and other modern devises. I believe Roland and Rick’s accomplishments can’t be considered matched or bested. I wouldn’t take anything away from KVD. He is one of the best if not the best of the modern era of bass fishing pros. Give the old pros their due for what they accomplished with what they had.

I don’t know if you’re aware of this but the entire multi-billion dollar sportfishing industry is built on being “gimmicky”! There’s enough of us gullible/can’t resist the temptation fishermen out there that are always looking for the next “secret weapon”, myself included, to sustain it. Whether it be some hot new color (Sexy Shad), new or revived bait (Chatter Bait, Scrounger Head), rod and reel (multicolored microguide rod, Supercaster reel), boat accessory (Power Pole) there will always be “lures that catch fish and lures that catch fishermen”. Only time and experience will tell which turns out to be which. It’s not like he’s the only one using it and it’s not available to the other Elites. Jeff Kriet and Greg Hackney both have one and I’m sure others do. It’s essentially the old BioSonix system with an easier/simpler user interface. If Clunn thought it would help him all he would have to do is ask and they’d supply him instantly!

Im pretty sure I read somewhere that Kriet owns part of that company along with KVD. I would make those bold statements to if I owned a company that had to sell $400 noise boxes. I think it would be awesome if they were legit, but I imagine its not.
