Today’s Top 3
1. Is pro carding in the cards?

From a good Zell interview on the Bassin’Zone:

> “I’ve had discussions with people about the possibility of ‘carding’ the true professionals who make their living strictly by fishing at the top level and don’t have another primary business venture.”

> “I think that if you’re a true professional angler and your income is strictly from fishing, you should be able to pick out your events and be able to fish them regardless of what tour it is.”

Hmm. Cool idea, but I think about as likely as Bert de-aging back to his ol’ sef:

2. New Zoom bait and color.

Fluke stick, green pumpkin purple green.

“Fluke stick” sounds a lot like a an insult tossed around back in the day….

3. Do your cranks HFC?

> LiveTarget announces the addition of the new HFC Craw…. HFC stands for “hunt for center,” which is an engineered feature of this bait series that causes the HFC Craw to not only erratically deviate from a straight line track during retrieve, but to also continuously self-correct itself to get back on “center.”

> Look for this bait to be especially effective for working the 7- to 8-feet depths when targeting big pre-spawn bass.

> …weighs approximately 3/8-oz and measures 2″ (52mm)…colors are Phantom Green, Spring Craw, Root Beer, Chartreuse Root Beer, Copper Root Beer and Red.

> David Walker: “This will be my go-to crankbait for cold water, pre-spawn fish, and especially when the water is clear. This lure has all the qualities to make it a spectacular producer.”

Cool. If you’re wondering, KFC doesn’t have crawfish but Popeyes does:

1. Win Randy Howell’s boat – again!

Giving it away for the second year in a row, to help King’s Home. Very cool.

2. IROD adds Hawk finesse spinning rod.

> IROD will add a spinning rod to its flagship Air series which will meet the stringent design standards of Kevin Hawk, winner of the 2010 Forrest Wood Cup and a rookie on the Bassmaster Elite Series trail.

> “It’s no secret that a spinning rod is an important part of my arsenal,” Hawk said. “I’ve worked hard with the design team at IROD to deliver a light, super-sensitive spinning rod that can be used for dropshotting, throwing a shaky head and skipping a wacky rig. It’s rare to find a rod that has the right action to do all three, but the Air spinning rod has it.”

3. ID: A record/not rainbow/not.

This is what a 28-09 rainbow looks like. Sorta.

Warning: This explanation may cause eye-rolling, dizziness and, in rare cases, loose stools….

> Tui Moliga of Lapwai, a coho biologist at the Nez Perce Tribal Hatchery, was bouncing salmon eggs for chinook below Dworshak Dam recently when he hooked a trout that has grown fat by feeding on kokanee that sometimes flush through the dam.

> “He would dive down deep and get in the channel. He was stripping line. We had no net or anything to bring him in. It was pretty sketchy,” he said.

> The state record rainbow trout, caught in the Snake River in 2009 by Michelle Larsen-Williams of Pingree, Idaho, weighed 20 pounds, 2 ounces. But Dupont [a different biologist] expects the trout might be a Kamloops, a strain of rainbow trout from Canada that is considered different than other rainbows.

> At the time, DuPont was unsure even if the fish is a rainbow if it would qualify for the record book. The North Fork is open to rainbow trout fishing. But according to state regulations, any rainbow over 20 inches long in the Clearwater River or the North Fork below the dam is considered a steelhead.

> Moliga is a member of the Nez Perce Tribe and broke no laws or regulations by keeping the trout. But non-tribal anglers cannot keep rainbow trout caught from the Clearwater River or its North Fork that are more than 20 inches long unless it is during an open steelhead fishing season and the fish has a clipped adipose fin.

What in the heck happened to this whole record fish thing?? Seems to be a mess everywhere….

4. Mepps squirrel cooking champeenship.

Mepps, the world’s largest user of rodent tails, is holding this cookoff. Brilliant! Seriously.

Wonder if any of the AR B.A.S.S. folks will be there…Bowman….

5. Win a Chevy Silverado.

BassGold News

1. BassGold midseason grade: A-

That’s BassGold’s grade for PREDICTING – as in, ahead of time – the winning pattern for every B.A.S.S. tournament so far this year, from the Classic and Elites to the college derbies. Put another way, that’s 92% dead on.

That’s some dang result, ain’t it! If you don’t think that’s a brand new wrinkle to this whole bassin’ thang, you ain’t whistlin’ Dixie!

Btw, tx much to B.A.S.S., MegaStrike and several other companies for supporting BassGold….

Tip of the Day

Hank Cherry: Don’t be hard-headed.

Taken from a Q&A on Bassin’master.com:

> I can get so caught up in what I’m doing – and have so much confidence in it – that I’ll stick with it too long when I should be doing something entirely different. I’m working on how I can better recognize those situations and switch gears.

> I learned it just last week (June 2013) on the Mississippi River. I was catching a lot of fish around rocks on topwater and a jig, and I completely ignored the idea that there might be better bass around some of the wood cover. It burnt me. Now I know better than to put all my eggs in one basket.

> Gerald Swindle told me that I think too much, and that sometimes you just have to put the trolling motor down and go fishing. When things aren’t going well on the water, I think of that. Also, my friend Bryan Thrift is always saying, “No matter what, don’t panic!”

Quote of the Day

I’m not good at anything else.

Danny Jones, aspiring pro fisherman from PA, on why he wants to go pro. Also said:

> “It’s all I think about. It’s all I want to do. I just want to have a job I love because not many people can say that.”

Hey Danny, are you good at sleeping in your truck?

Seriously, wishin’ him luck.
