Did you know there's more crankbaits in bassin' than stars in the Milky Way? Okay I made that up but I bet it's close hahaha! Here's just a few – some new, some not.
Points:
- Gerald Swindle, the king of junk fishing, loves it.
- He's caught suspended fish by ripping this bait through them.
- It's a smaller profile and gets deep.
- The David Fritts-designed DTs are seriously good baits, and the colors are good.
I plan to grind it on the bottom in 5-8' and bang it off whatever's down there. Droolin' a little thinkin' 'bout it! Here's Gerald and Ott DeFoe givin' the deets on it – and btw that's ^ "green gizzard":
Mention this bait every year because it ketches 'em – but definitely don't get one! Definitely do not get "crystal Texas shad" ^! Definitely don't fish it fast! And definitely don't listen to t he tips in this W2F vid! 😁
Gitcha crankin' system! The 1.5 squarebill goes 3-5' and the MR is 5-8' so you're covered 2' to at least 8'! The colors are consistent and Japan-great: that's ^ "real green crawfish." Btw those little ridges on the bellies of many Yo-Zuri baits – "wave-motion ribbing" – are of course there for a reason. They move the water in ways other baits don't.
Check Brandon Cobb and Clent Davis talkin' 'bout 'em:
Every time I look at that pic, I swear that bait's looking back at me...😳
You can blame Mark Daniels Jr for that eyeball and for having to buy this bait, but then you can thank him when you see him cuz MDJ ain't makin' no junk! MR = "medium range" and 12 is how many bass Mark thinks should be in a limit! Okay nope it's how deep it gets to. And how 'bout that yellower "bluegill" color ^.
Compact body, internal weight-transfer systems, flat sides + tapered tails = tight wiggle, slow rise on the pause, low-pitched knock, Mustad Triple Grip trebles. Here's Mark talkin' 'bout it:
Hardcore cranks are easy baits to crank. So easy I asked MLF BPT rookie Ryan Salzman if I was nuts or had some weird ones or whatever, and he said nope that's the way they are. Plus the SR has a really nice magnetic weight-transfer system:
> ...gives you about 30% more casting distance. "When casting, the weight snaps to the tail of the bait to prevent tumbling, even in strong headwinds. Once the bait enters the water, the weight is pulled forward by the magnet for instant and erratic searching action.
Finishes and components are really good. Here's Ryan and Jason Lambert talkin' and fishin' this bait:
Just a few more choosin's:
Jackall Mushbob 50 MR – I know nothing about this bait but "Mushbob" sounds like "Spongebob" so here you go! 🧽
If you need an all-around crankin' rod, this 7' M Mod rod might be the deal. It's the lower price point ($199.99) of the 2 VIRTUS/Jewel lines but still high quality:
> ...will cover most crankbait applications from a shallow-running squarebill to a deep diving crankbait. ...provides an angler the ability to target accurate casts in shallow cover yet make long casts all day long. This rod is forgiving and has great balance in the hand.
If you're wantin' a more-specific crankin' stick, the Red Diamond line has a 7' M Mod Wart/Crawler Rod and a 7' 2" MH Deep Diver Rod.
Maybe you don't like fishing jigs. That's cool – maybe you eat lotsa soy too...lol just messin'! 😁 All good but I'm bettin' most bass peeps are like:
Gotta start out with this'n because some cat named Jason Christie won 2 tournaments on it already this year, one bein' the little ol' Bassmaster Classic! Right now the jig's only available in 5/8 and he fished "orange craw" ^ in both derbs with a YUM Craw Chunk.
Named after the Muddy Water Mobsters who gang up on bass fishermen on the AR River, this deal got famous when one of those mobsters – Chris Jones – qualified for the Classic with it and then made a run at winning a Classic with it. That "mouse" head design is to help it come through shallow cover. Here's some tips on fishin' it from Frank Scalish:
Frank looks like he's havin' a outta-body experience in that deal! 😂
This brand new jig line is based around Gary Klein's loooong experience fishing and making jigs, including colors. Right now there's 6 different jigs, gonna mention the Flippin' Jig and Swim Jig here.
Briefly the Flippin' Jig ("br gp" ^) is good for flippin' AND skippin' even though there's also a Skippin' Jig. The Powerbait Swim Jig was designed by Gary and Berkley, but was helped and okayed by Bobby Lane ("fire craw" below). Yep they have the Powerbait skirts and that can't hurt, but as you know that head and hook combo has to be right. Gotta think these are, let's fish 'em and find out!
I was like, "Bobby why does that jig have weird eyes on it man?" He was all, "Are you saying I have weird eyes?" And I was like, "You got anymore of those Gatorades?" 🤣
Fished the snot outta this jig last fall, love the "bama craw" color ^ in particular. Never missed a fish. The head ain't the best in rocks but I knew that going in. To me these jigs are the real deal.
JIG TRAILERS
Ole Capt. Cueball was like:
That's Popcorn "Ryan" Whitacre's jig so here again is what he says about the ExoNed as a trailer:
> It's TPE (stretchy floating stuff). It's a little bigger than most Neds and weighs more so I can throw it further. It skips well without getting tangled up as much like some Neds. Super buoyant so it stands up on most heads. For some reason it rigs easier than other Neds too. Segmented body makes it easy to shorten when needed. Also awesome colors.
The top pic is the bait (in "bass whacker"). The 2 underneath it are what you can do with the bait – where you get that "Versa(tile)" name. Right now comes in 2.5" and 3", which means you kinda have a Beaver-style bait, chunk, craw, finesse Craw and a Ned-style bait. Pretty cool!
New bait, I see it a little more as a flipping bait as is, but bite it down and there you go. Comes in 3.5 and 4.5, and was designed by MLF pro Scott Suggs ("bama bug" ^). Has ribs for more surface area = more Powerbait scent. Suggs is a serious craw-head so might wanna check it out if it looks sexy to you!
New bait – ribbed body and claw arms with raised edges to create a lot of water movement, soft and floaty TPR plastic, pre-molded hook pocket so you can rig it regular or vertical. If you've fished it please lmk, I'm curious!
I probably don't have to mention Zoom, but there might be some folks – let's call 'em "the law" – who don't trust Wesley Strader...🤣 Just messin' Wes! I will mention that the Z Craw (and Jr version) seems to be in a bunch of pro boats.
A bunch of other cool 'n needed stuff!
Be cool/comfortable, look cool, and your rig tight is the only way to roll! Let's git after it.
SIMMS stuff
It's literally all good, here's some newness:
Can you have enough blue/grey, orange and non-slippage? No! EMOJ
> The lightweight, breathable slip-on Challenger Air Vent Shoe is a big step forward...comfort, durability and relentless grip....
> Highly breathable uppers provide outstanding comfort. EVA outsole with micro-siped rubber pods for slip resistance and comfort for on-deck performance. Simms Right-Angle footbed for all-day support. MSRP: $99.95
I have one – can't wait to look stylin' in it and finally being warm enough to need it!
> ...combines naturally wicking UPF50 fabric with easy-breathing back and underarm panels that maximize comfort in sticky, simmering conditions.
> A lightweight jersey knit fabric that feels smooth and stretches with each cast, while wicking moisture away from the skin to keep you comfortable in hot weather. MSRP: $59.95
Grundens
Gitcha tropical feel on when you're sweatin' on those warm days with this-here "blue light liquid fade" sun shirt. I dig it!
> This entire collection is UPF rated to prevent sunburn and long-term skin damage...sun protection only works if you’re comfortable enough to wear it, and this collection offers a suite of HeiQ technologies including anti-odor, stain release and thermo-regulating properties to keep you cool, comfortable, and ultimately focused....
Shoot if it's really anti-odor I might buy some for my fishin' buds hahaha!
If a company makes stuff for commercial fishermen and that stuff keeps them alive in crazy places like the Bering Sea, gotta think their flip-flops won't slip....
Gitcha rig rigged out right!
Boats gotta be clean, ultra-functional (like an extension of your mind!) and hopefully look sweeeet! Here's my usual list of reminder plus a couple other thangs:
Boat

Your outboard 😍 Sea Foam Marine PRO
We all let our rigs sit for some period of time, and the best way to get your outboard juiced up and cleaned out is Sea Foam Marine PRO. The original Sea Foam was originally invented for exactly that purpose, for outboards, so there you go, and Marine PRO is a refined version of the original for marine engines. Only thing you can do is try it!
I use it and can recommend it, along with regular Sea Foam Motor Treatment and Sea Foam High Mileage (for trucks/cars over 75K miles). I did have a little fear the first time about pouring a $10 can into a 5-figure piece of machinery EMOJ but I got past it, glad I did.
Should be able to get any of the above at Wally Mart or your local auto parts store.
Trolling Motor
More choices than ever, you know I use the MotorGuide Tour Pro, which last time I checked is not as expensive as most AND this:
Shaw ain't no spring chicken anymore and yep he can do that with the MG's Zero-G Lift Assist. He says, "You can’t do this with another trolling motor" and he's right! Just one deal about it....
This whole deal reminds me – reminder to self – to take the Revital Outdoors CBD stuff BEFORE I go out there and start to make myself sore...and feelin' sore for me means feelin' more tire than I should or want to. Gitcha cannabinoids firin'!
'Lectronics and setup
I have no specific recommendation on screens, a boat rigger, wiring or batteries, but remember that if you upgrade your electronics and/or troller, you gotta have the right wiring AND battery setup or at the very least you won't get the best resolution on your screens. At the worst you might end up floating around out there.
When it comes to all that, highly recommend asking around or going to a pro before spending your hard-earned $$ on anything.
Camera gear – YOLOtek
Are you a GoPro guy? A Tactacam guy? Don't know? YOLOtek has got you taken care of, whether you're in a bass boat or kayak. They'll recommend and sell you everything you need to "always be recordin'" so you have something to show the fellers at work!
