4. Why "retire" now?
> "I guess the best answer is it just felt right – like the timing felt right. There's probably like a dozen things that all sort of happened in the last few years that when you combine 'em it felt right that the timing is right now.
> "...since I've been back at the Elites, I've always felt like it'd happen sooner or later. Every year Becky and I sit down at the end of the year...what do you think? Last year we sat down and said, 'You know what? The timing's right.'
> "You can take it from a religious standpoint or a philosophical standpoint, it was kinda like meant to be and I think it was.
> "We just had our first grandchild literally born the last day of my last Elite tournament. Things happen....
[More things that went into it:]
> "Getting all of these projects off the ground – not to sound morbid but we're running out of time. Everyone runs out of time in life.
> "I felt like for Vegas and Stella [his young kids], it's time for me to switch gears and be there more for them. Vegas – it's like I'm almost passing the torch...teaching and coaching and mentoring. Not just with Vegas, but in a bigger sense.
> "I am not an FFS basher. I'm not fearful of change, I'm not anti-tech. But the sport is not the sport I knew growing up. It's just different. I'm not saying different bad, but it hasn't felt the same for me the last few years....
> "All these little slices all kind of collided and it just felt right. The timing was right."
5. What's next for the madman currently known as Mike Ike?
> "Two things. The first one is I'm not 100% sure [laughs]. And honestly there's a beauty to that...the uncertainty.... I'm not 100% sure what's gonna happen in the next handful of years.
> "But Becky and I, we're very type A [I would say Becky is triple-A lol!]. There's definitely things that we have planned that we're stoked about, that I can't wait to bring out.
> "The top of the list is the return of City Limits Fishing [his] urban fishing show. It's so exciting to me to bring that back [2027].
> "#2 for us is live programming. Even for me as fan of fishing or other sports – or other things in culture – I love live programming and I watch it. ...the Ike Cam will be our live programming platform...it will give people real insight into what happens in a day of fishing.
> "The last piece is the continued growth of the Ike Foundation. We really want to take it to the next level. Getting more kids fishing, getting more kids fishing in cities, coaching, mentoring...especially me personally at a whole new level because I didn't have the time before.
> "...those are the top 3 things. It's not retirement – it's just changing gears. I'm going to keep working with all the amazing companies we work with. All that's the same, I'm just not fishing the Elites.
> "...I can't go cold turkey [on tournaments]. If I could fish 6-10 events a year, that would be a nice year. The Northern Toyotas, 1 division of the Opens – whichever one has more events close to the Northeast – and a couple kayak events.
> "I can't just shut it off like [KVD and Skeet ] did. If happen to win [an Open], I could make a another Classic. I'd love to fish another Classic."
Bonus Q: A lot of people don't understand what a student of the sport and baits you are. You've been ahead of the curve on baits for a while now. Can you give us a hint about anything coming that you're involved in?
> "...one of the biggest things I'll continue to do is work with companies on new products, new shapes, new colors, new actions, rods and reels...that are different. I have a lot of cool stuff in place that's following some of these new trends.
> "...the [new/not out yet puffball] jig I'm doing with John Crews that we soft-launched at ICAST. You'll see a lot more come down that pipe, and the same thing with Berkley. Some crazy shapes...
> "The big-bait stuff has been the storm. The Chop Block [Berkley glide] has been a bigger launch and had more impact than any other bait [he's done with Berkley]. I think that's because it has crossover.
> "[Other baits he did] were very largemouth- and smallmouth-focused. With the Chop Block and some of these big baits – glide baits and swimbaits – they have crossover appeal. The muskie guys love it, the saltwater guys love it, it's become the hottest snook and tarpon bait in FL.
