Matt Puncher wins Open, Two new big bass catches, Rigging a Hudd

Today’s Top 5

Matt Puncher wins Seminole Open.

Oops nope not Matt Puncher but Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, FL, who won it with 49-05 — BY punching mats:

Few deets from Bassin’masterin’.com:

> …flipping a Zoom Z Craw that was Texas-rigged with a 4/0 Mustad hook and a 1 1/4- or 1 1/2-ounce Elite Tungsten Worm Weight. He horsed his bass from the thick grass beds he was fishing with a 7-foot 11-inch G. Loomis flipping rod sporting [sporting??] a Shimano Core reel [not made anymore — bummer because they were sick!] spooled with 60-pound Gamma braided line.

Here’s a picture of the area in Tackle Warehouse where they store those weights:

Okay here’s the actual rig:

(That bait looks like many other similar baits. Wonder if the bass see things thataway?)

> Brandon also won the Angler of the Year (Southern Open division). Any Bassmaster Open angler that finishes among the top five in the AOY standings qualifies for the Elite Series.

> Tharp failed to qualify for the 2016 Bassmaster Classic through the Elite Series. Winning the Seminole Bassmaster Open was his last chance to qualify for the Classic. He nearly pulled it off.

He finished 2nd by 4 lbs, doing the exact same thing McMillan was doing:

> His 7-foot 11-inch extra heavy action Halo Twilite rod was paired with 60-lb Gamma braided line. Two lures…Zoom’s Z Craw and Z Hog. One was rigged with a heavy Reins tungsten sinker and the other with a Reins Punch Shot Tungsten weight…features a collar to which Tharp attached a skirt.

[TackleWarehouse.com is closing out the Halo rods for sick prices, click here.]

Doesn’t mean Tharp is out of the Elites, though. We’ll see how it all works out.

Chad Grigsby, from someplace called “Minner-soda,” finished 3rd, also punching that Matt dude.

Other Open stuff I noticed.

Looks like Brandon’s secret-like ingredient was chewin’ baccer:

If B.A.S.S. is going to run booty shots like this, the sponsors better get their logos back yonder:

Bobby Lane didn’t do so hot at the Open cuz he was fishin’ for the wrong species:

Trevor Fitzgerald, owner of Fitzy rods, was 2nd after day 2 and ended up 6th:

Jim Murray Jr. was one of two in the top 12 that ran a tin boat up the Flint River:

Looks like a big motor on that rig….

12-lb HOWG caught in VA.

Check this 12-02 largie — 25.5″ long, 22″ girth — caught in VIRGINIA by Stephen Miklandric on Saturday. On a jig “at a small lake just outside of Richmond:”

Didn’t think there was a bass over 9 — or 8, or 7 — lbs in Virginia….
#stout

Incredible as it sounds, VA’s record largie is a 16-04 caught from Connor Lake on May 20, 1985 — which is when this dude ruled the world:

Dude once helped me cap a drain plug while under power with a match, a Vie-enny sausage and one pair of drawers.

Giant largie caught in IL.

Almost a bigger deal than that VA DD is this IL fish, which weighed 8-06. While it’s true that big bass don’t grow in IL — except in Terry Brown’s imagination (lol gotcha Terry) — believe it or not the state record there is a 13-01 caught in Stone Quarry Lake in 1976. This one’s a swimbait fish:

1. K-Pink now workin’ fer Bassin’ Cat.

> Rick Pierce, president of Bass Cat and Yar-Craft boats, recently announced the appointment of Kevin Short as the international sales rep for both brands.

I am shocked that: a) K-Pink’s real name is Kevin Short and b) he can speak international.

Congrats bud.

2. Matt Herren’s Skeeter for sale.

3. 2016 BFL schedule is out.

Also 2016 Rayo rules, including international qualification. Maybe Kevin Short can help translate?

Works at Bass Pro Shops, love bass fishing and “knows the location of the 40,000 items for sale in the fishing department.” Asperger’s is the “Rain Man” condition.

Wouldn’t you be doing that too?

8. Yuskei Murayama now Megabass USA CEO.

Congrats to Yuskei, promoted from VP:

9. More about Strike King XD cranks.

A lightweight intro to some of the most effective crankbaits period. Many Elite pros have Strike King XDs and Rapala DTs, regardless of sponsorship. You should too.

Lines of the Day

Deputies say they stole a bass boat, trailer and a Sahara Jeep that was being stored inside the boat.

From a police report. Must’ve been a HUGE bassin’ boat.

Aaron Martens might be a more prolific talker than he is an angler.

Line on the Bassmaster.com homepage. I’m confused. How does one become a prolific angler? Maybe like this dude? (Pic forwarded to me….)

Hey BassBlaster forwarders!
If you’re forwarding every Blaster to other bass crackheads, tx much — or you can email me the addys and we’ll take care of it! We’ll never send spam, sell the list or anything else crazy….

Tip of the Day

Hudd = Huddleston Deluxe Swimbait. Butch Brown = Obi-Wan Kenobi of swimbaits. This = awesome vid, except for the muzak. Just in case you thought this swimbaiting thing was just saving, buying, casting and reeling:

Props to Butch for a) figuring that stuff out, b) telling everyone about it, and c) having the time to do it. One of my goals for retirement (bahahahahaha! ain’t never gonna happen) is to learn how to rig a bait like this.

Quote of the Day

…it was kind of weird, it was just that little voice in your head or whatever [saying], ‘It’s a test.’

– TN’s Bryan Leonard, who won the recent BFL Vol Division Super Tournament on Douglas Lake, talkin’ ’bout a God moment after he lost two key fish the last day. Full story:

> His second round started out in an unpromising fashion as he let a pair of sizable bass slip away, but he rallied from his early mistakes.

> “I had a moment there after I lost the big one, I collected my thoughts, and I’m just asking God, ‘Why? Why?’ And it was kind of weird, it was just that little voice in your head or whatever [saying], ‘It’s a test.’ And I said, ‘OK.’

> “Put my spinnerbait down and went another 2 miles up the lake, pulled up to a brushpile, dropped my jig in there, caught a 5-pounder just like that. That fired me up.”

> …in the same spot, Leonard [caught] a 3-pounder. Then a little farther up the lake, he reeled in a 6-lb 10-oz behemoth that proved pivotal in his victory. “It was my day. That’s just the way that sport is.”

Ain’t that the truth. I love those stories.

Shot of the Day

I’m thinking this bass was pretty surprised:

Random

Now that it’s official that bacon and other red meat cause cancer, some reality:

> …eating two slices of bacon a day increases your relative risk for colorectal cancer by 18 percent. Given the frequency of colorectal cancer, that means your risk of getting colorectal cancer over your life goes from about 5 percent to 6 percent….

> “If this is the level of risk you’re running your life on, then you don’t really have much to worry about,” says Alfred Neugut, an oncologist and cancer epidemiologist at Columbia.

Be that as it may, I’m sure the US govt — led by senators from CA — will try to outlaw red meat or whatever it is they do there that passes for work…that we pay them to do…after China and Japan lend us our money back…. Okay I’m done!

The one and only James Overstreet said this about it:

> Well that’s it…it’s gonna happen, I’m eventually gonna die.

You fish these baits yet?

The best, yo!
