The LA Delta Has Crabs…

…and Classic Competitors Better Have ‘Em Too

Did ya get the importance of the blue crab thing yet?

We reported some time back that blue crabs represent a HUGE portion of the diet of Delta bass – 34% to 74%, depending on the year. That was bass in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, but hey – that’s a Gulf Delta on roughly the same latitude.

And once again, if you somehow choose not to believe the scientists, here’s a quote from this week’s Science post:

“I mainly stick to fishing Strike King Elite double rattle black/blue/purple jigs with powder-blue Zoom super-chunks, which resembled the crabs….”

Who said it? A fisherman. In the Classic. Kevin…something.

Not only does KVD crabs, he’s fishin’ ’em.

I use a similar jig setup to fish for redfish, except I use a green-pumpkin skirt to match the shell with a sapphire blue trailer to mimic the claws. If you can find a green pumpkin jig with a few strands of chartreuse or orange in it, even better.

None of the other saltwater guys will throw a traditional jig down here, and I’m not making it a point to give up the secret.

I just don’t know how they can’t look at a jig and see a crab. Oh well…
