KVD Reveals Secret ‘Get Mad At ‘Em’ Bait

(Oakley photo)

How many times have you heard Kevin VanDam say that he went out and “got made at ’em” when he’s won a tournament?

A bunch.

I’ve been after him for years about what exactly that means. Is it an attitude? A bait? A change of strategy? What?

Never, not once, did he give me anything specific. Weird, because KVD is super specific. So I knew there was something there.

Finally I got our mutual friend Mark Zona to convince KVD to tell me something (thanks Z). He told me the following:

> He has a basket of things/tricks he uses.

> One or two of these things has worked better than others over the years.

> Not only does he “get mad at ’em,” these tricks get the bass made at him – prompting the well-known reflexive/aggressive strikes needed to win.

He says he’ll show me one of the things in his basket. I’m stoked.

While we’re on the phone, he sends me to this website. My reaction is: Real funny.

He says, “No, I’m serious.” He says the bait is named after him. WTH?

So I scroll down on the page, and sure enough get to this, “The #1 Lure:”

He says it works on the bass every time – they get ticked and slam it.

I don’t know, man. I gotta think he’s pulling my leg.

But I did order a dozen of them.

Wonder if one of them would scare off the muskies at our one lake…them things are driving me bonkers, plus costing me tackle.

That’s the lure he flips towards Aaron’s boat at check in during Classic week.
