How Fred Roumbanis fished the Atchafalaya Open

Freddy Boom-Boom Roumbanis was crushing it at the Atchafalaya Open, flipping hyacinth mats. But then on day 3 he ran out to his area and:

> “Unfortunately a boat ran through my juice before I got there and destroyed it.

> “I guess a local duck boat ran through it the last day. There were boat lanes through the hyacinth. It was all messed up.”

He ended up finishing 7th, but for sure was on a winning pattern. Here’s the skinny:

> “I flipped thick gator grass and hyacinth in the Bayou Black area. I was flipping up tight to reeds with gator grass with hyacinth over it. Next to reeds there was 6” more water.

> “I caught fish from 1′ to 3′. A lot of them my boat was dragging in mud.

> “I had a 50-yard stretch where I caught 4 fish over 4 lbs. That was my primary stretch, where it dropped down a little deeper. Then I had maybe another 150 yards of water. I fished it back and forth.

> “I used 1-oz and 1.5-oz [weights depending on] the density of the grass I was fishing. The bottom was so silty — there was no grass on the bottom. It was just surface floating grass, so if it was too heavy a weight, the bait would sink into the silt and disappear. If I could get away with 1-oz I was much better off.

> “99% of fish were on the initial drop. I didn’t have to jig it.”

Baits and gear

He flipped a Gene Larew Punch Out Craw (black/blue) and a Larew Hoodaddy Jr. Here’s the Punch Out rigged up:

He used a punch skirt on the Punch Out craw — “more for the clicking sound. I really thinned out the skirt.” Rest of the gear:

> Gamakatsu Heavy Cover Flippin’ Hook (straight shank): 4/0 for the Punch Out Craw, 3/0 for the Hoodaddy.

> iRod Air Bub’s Flipping Stick, Ardent reel (7.3) and prototype 80-lb Gliss line.
