Greg Hackney won a bunch in the pre-FFS era, so it's really not a surprise to see him do it again on a trail that doesn't allow FFS. But this one was on a lake he hadn't been to in a couple decades and in a tournament that had I think double-digit locals and semi-locals fishing it – including fellow Elite pro KJ Queen who finished 2nd by 10 oz.
Here's how Greg got 'er done for his first NPFL "shield" trophy.
Going in and practice
> "I knew the bass spawn would be a factor...the only thing that surprised me was I was expecting some type of batfish spawn and that to be a huge factor there. And it was not. There might have been a little bit, but it was not a factor in the event.
> "That lake has a hot-water discharge so in parts of the lake the spawn starts pretty early. But the big deal was we had so much cold weather this spring...the baitfish spawn and the bass spawn were probably a little behind. Which was good for me because there were lots of spawning fish.
> "It probably took some of the local advantage out of it...a lot of locals in the tournament....
> "The deal was I just tried to find as many bigger than average bedding fish as I could, so I pretty much had decided that I would sight-fish the entire event. I didn't have any other thing going.
> "We had some really cold weather the first morning of practice – it was 32 degrees and my cover was frozen that first morning. Then it gradually warmed up and was nice.
> "The deal was it got pretty cold, but it never really affected the water temperature that much. Typically when you get this late in the spring, cold fonts don't have quite the same effect if the water has gotten to a certain temperature.
> "When we got there [the water temp] was 61-62 [and kinda stayed in the] low to mid-60s."
Tournament
> "The 1st day of the tournament I ran all the fish that I had located in practice. About half of them were gone, but that's pretty normal. So the first day I pretty much burned up all my practice.
> "The 2nd and the 3rd day, morning times I would just go fishing. I went to areas I liked and blind-fished til it got light enough that I could see.
> "I pretty much put the trolling motor down, and targeted spotted bass more than largemouth [Norman is a known good spotted bass lake]. ...I would just find largemouths during the tournament. I pretty much knew after practice I couldn't win on just 1 species – I didn't have enough of 1 species found.
> "You could catch 17 lbs of spotted bass. It was the first time I had been there in 20 years. I fished 1 Bassmaster there my 2nd year and the lake wasn't that good. The lake is really good now. It has a lot of fish in it – a lot of really good spotted bass in it.
> "...20-30 keepers a day. If I I wouldn't get to looking and just fish, I don't know how many fish I could catch, the numbers were crazy.
> "I think I weighed 8 spotted bass and 7 largemouth. I weighed 2 largemouths the 1st day, the 2nd day was all spots, and the last day I weighed all largemouth.
> "The last day I guess the Good Lord blessed me...'Here's some largemouth so you can win 100 grand' [laughs]. I was blown away by that. I went to an area that had a lot of good spotted bass and had a gameplan to look at some new areas for largemouth, and I never left.
> "I went in to fish for spots, and I would catch spots and then I would find a largemouth and cull a spot. I'd go a little further and I'd cull another one.
> "The big thing with the spotted bass is they were [spawning] a hair deeper but they weren't deep. Let's say 3-4'. They would be on stumps or rocks. But the largemouths would be much shallower.
> "The majority of the fish I weighed in did not come off boat docks [Norman is a known dock lake]. I caught a lot fish off docks during the tournament, but only 2 that I weighed in. The 2nd day I caught my 1st spot off a boat dock that I weighed, and the last day I caught 1 largemouth off a dock.... Lots of fish were on the docks..fry-guarders...they didn't really play....
> "Other than that, almost all of them were between the docks. Spots would be on wood or rock, and the largemouth would be on a flat place...a really shallow, big, flat place. I'd just go inbetween every dock. They just wanted to be in direct sunlight.
> "...the majority, with the exception of 1 creek, seemed to be in the short pockets. Little short rounded pockets. Short flat pockets."
