I’m Not a @&#^&) ‘Fisher’

Does this look like you?

And neither are you. The use of this politically correct “fisher” term is driving me nuts. (Maybe I’m a little high-strung.)

Apparently the news folks who use the word can’t write “fisherman” because that’s sexist. They can’t write the word “angler” because they’ve apparently never heard of it. Or maybe they use it because they never knew anyone who caught anything – they just “fished.” Drowned a worm for an hour, then left the bank.

A fisher, to us outdoor types, is a member of the weasel family. That’s right: “A carnivorous mammal (Martes pennanti) of northern North America, having thick, dark-brown fur.”

This also leads me to an issue with news reporters calling poachers “hunters” – as in, “Hunter arrested for killing four illegal elk” or whatever – but I’ll stop here. Sorta. The mass media continue to not do us outdoor types any favors.

I’ve never heard the term “fisher” used in today’s media, but that would annoy me, too. Funny how those media types can make up words and think it’s alright.

My mom always calls anglers fisher-persons, although she only does it to piss me off. I prefer angler as well. I have not heard anglers refered to as fishers in public either except from the source mentioned above.

Wellllllllllllllllllllll, I do have a longish nose, and I’m furry, and I like fish, and I’m a man, so I guess that makes me a Fisherman!! The Mess Media is clueless. It won’t get any better with the huge reductions in staff at the media outlets do to the “need” to pander to the “I gotta download ANOTHER app….” and cellphoneasmoderndaycrackpipe crowd.
