Erie Smallie Fishing: Fair = Good!

Art Ferguson with a couple average Erie smallies (artoffishing.com photo).

Word from the Ohio DNR is that smallmouth bass fishing this year in Lake Erie is “expected to be fair,” with “bass abundance below desired levels.”

But – a big but – is that the average size of our favorite brown fish in the lake will be 15-22 inches, meaning 2 to 6 pounds.

Dang!

Anyone need a partner for a tourney up there?

I’m sure Erie fishermen know this already, but “a closed season remains in effect from May 1 through June 24, during which all black bass (smallmouth and largemouth) must be immediately released. Beginning June 25, the daily bag limit is five with a 14-inch minimum.

I think they should put a slot limit on them where they can be kept between 12 and 16 inches and throw everything else back. It’s a good way to keep the big breeders breeding! Incredible fishery though!
