Don't just fish white spots.
|
|
> "The key is when you find a fish that's on a bed, what's crazy is you fish that one bed, catch that fish, then put your trolling motor on 100 and you look for another bed. A good sight-fisherman looks around all that bed in little places that most people don't think and it makes him become a better sight fisherman than the guy who just marks a white spot and goes to the next white spot....
> "...remember when there's...one there's several more because a guy can come right in behind you and catch another one, and it's a fish that you just didn't see. It's pretty crazy – you need to really keep your eyes in 360 mod when you're out there."
Notice he did NOT give away what those other spots look like...🤔
Some more gems in there too:

Why NOT to fish for spawners?
|
|
Kevin VanDam talkin' in a good MLF post – and if you think your spawn is over, that might not be the case:
> The spawn is a 2- to 3-month process in most lakes. And it usually happens in waves at different times in different portions of the lake, especially in big lakes.
> Also that window of when they move up and eat everything in sight before going on beds is usually a small window in a specific area. It lasts maybe a day. Once they actually spawn and "set down," then it takes time to catch them. ...catching this moment perfectly is very elusive....
> Pre-spawn and post-spawn patterns that surround the spawn are more stable and consistent over time than trying to catch that sudden move to the bank in a single pocket or cove. Also, these patterns are usually more repeatable over large sections of the lake, providing more real estate to work with.
> Typically the shallower, upper ends of lakes warm up fastest and the deeper, clearer lower ends are slower to warm. With that, the spawn in the upper end of a lake can be as much as a month ahead of the lower end.
Also don't forget fish that are spawning too deep to see....

Ultra-rare shot of a derp smallie in its natural environment!!
|
|
Maybe derps have clearer vision because of that snout deal?
On the other hand, here's a spectacular derp – another smallie – caught by Fred L on Chautauqua Lake, NY:

Who knew: Harley Davidson was started to get to fishin' spots.
|
|
> "When they were young boys, Bill Harley was tall and quiet while Arthur Davidson was short and talkative. Though different in personality, they shared a love for fishing. They would ride their bicycles to a lake nearby for fishing outings, pedaling up the hills.
> "One day in 1895, they came across an inventor riding a motorcycle. Inspired by the machine and looking to make the commute of their fishing outings easier, the two would go on to start building motorized bikes. Then they started a company. They called it Harley-Davidson."
Photo from an original Harley-Davidson ad with the wrong fish:

But here they are with some bass:
|
|
Is this dude dressed up as a rod guide??
|
|
Not sure where it's from but pretty positive it's NOT Seth Feider:
|
|
At Lake Bistineau:
> ...a Calvary Baptist Academy student-athlete who drowned during a fishing outing with his best friend.
> The Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office says...Hayden "Lane" Mangum...the bass boat he and his best friend, Cade Bedgood, were fishing from capsized in the swifter waters near the spillway at the LA Highway 154 bridge at about 4 pm Tuesday. Bedgood made it to shore safely.
So tough. Please pray for his family, Cade and that community. 🙏 ✝️
Says he has a bad ankle sprain, can't fish standing up....
> "I've got one of those wheely things that I'll use to get around. And I'll likely miss a lot of practice. But I'll be there.
> "If it was going to be strictly an offshore thing, I think I'd be alright. But all reports are that it doesn't look like it will play out that way."
Chris fishin' big swimbaits at the Fork Elite. Soak it all in! Amazing to watch him, Brandon and other guys showing that this huge swimbait thing is a for-real tournament option.
Some cool visuals in that vid, like this – a bass going after a white bass but ignorring Chris' topwater:
|
|
Brings up an innerestin' point which is that the tours tend to go early because FL is feeshable then.
I was like, "Ish how much trash can you really collect with a D Bomb?" And he was all, "5/0 hook."
🤣
Seth said, "Close!" 😁
|
|
Also Justin Russell from Russell Marine talkin' trollers.
8. MLFLWer Sonar "Miles" Burghoff swims a surface worm.
New Z-Man bait:
> "For several years I searched for a high-performance swimming worm, but just couldn't find one that clicked. I wanted something with extra bulk and weight – a bait with some natural, neutral buoyancy that could be fished a bunch of different ways. So I was really stoked when my friends at Z-Man listened to my wishes, and helped me design the Turbo FattyZ."
> "Love the way this worm spits and sputters on the surface. Slides right over and through the thickest pads and matted grass. Pause it in pockets and let its tail slowly waggle as the whole worm glides and entices bites. ...really sweet bait for working shallow cover, especially areas that've been worked hard by other lures."
Here's what it looks like, not on TW yet:
|
|
Dang what a stick! 1st was 2001. Pls lmk if you know any other high multi-AA guys....
Those Hot Springs must real hot cuz they sure do get a lotta tourneys....
You'll be glad you did!
Who would you watch? They wanna know!
Looks pretty good 'n different:
|
|
Or for all you Nedders, cut that PlasmaTail down as far as you can and rig it? I like that a bunch of the tail ends have different and bright colors – check 'em on the TW.
Believe it's "wintergreen shad"?

|
The catch:
> If anyone catches the bass between 12:01 am on Jun 12 and 11:59 pm on Jun 13, they will win $100,000.
It's a smallmouth. Wonder if Ott DeFoe will get his "illegal" tunnel rig out there and do something...or maybe Doomsday Mullins...or Strader or Walker or any one of thousands of TN sticks!
Believe it's US-wide, no source given tho.
This fall, 16 colleges already signed up:
> The Abu Garcia Bassmaster High School Combine will be a 3-day event where anglers will perform multiple tasks to show their skillset not only on the water but also display their knowledge of the sport as a whole. After the first day, colleges will have the opportunity to select anglers for a second look where they can further explore everything that angler has to offer and see if they would be the perfect fit for their fishing program.
So far the only events I know of are the 40-yd spring, deadlifts, vertical jump and tying the FG knot.... Kidding. My 2c fwiw:
- -Love it. Something different, hopefully fun, anything that gets young folks and coaches interacting is great.
- Of course there's folks who might not do the greatest in this stuff but do git 'er done in tourneys so hopin' the colleges reward the latter more.
Other than that reeeeally hope it's not like the NFL combine where grown men run around in their undies and other grown men get all excited about it...which is weird man....
Fwiw, a bud of mine at ESPN tracks high draft picks vs how they do in the league and says the two ain't correlated too well.
New CEO too, John Weiss, at one time EVP of Pure Fishing (Berkley, etc) when it was owned by Jarden. Sounds like Anything Possible also owns David Dudley's Perfection Lures.
No word on whether David will resurrect the Rabid Dog:
|
|
Then what, do they electrocute 'em or something?
Not bass fishing but innerestin':
> ...the owner of a "pay lake" business in NC coming up several times each year to the Seneca River in Onondaga County – particularly after the Wild Carp Classic each spring – to catch carp that he uses to stock in his pay lake.
> Currently there are no laws in NY, NC or SC that prohibit the practice of catching common carp in one state and transporting them to another for stocking....
Not sure that's a selling point??
PSAs
1. A couple electronics cover options sent in by bass-heads (thanks fellers!). Word is since they're bungees, you shouldn't leave 'em on or they'll become perma-stretched.
3. One of my new deals, instead of pickles at lunch: Zing Beans – they're fresh 'n hot, love 'em...little spendy though:

On BassBlaster.rocks right now...

Okay you might think this ain't worth readin' – because who doesn't know how to fish a Senko-type bait?? But it is. Not gonna blow your mind but some good stuff:
> There was a time early in my career when I didn't like to fish with spinning gear. [This must mean I'm still "early in my career." EMOJ] ...I came to realize that power fishing isn't always the answer and that spinning gear can save your bacon!
> ...usually set up with a weightless wacky-rigged [Berkley MaxScent] The General in green pumpkin. ...you can use any color you like as long as it's green pumpkin. I use other colors only when I've run out of green pumpkin.
> My hook is a 1/0 or 2/0 straight-shank, light-wire worm hook, and I run that hook straight through the middle of The General so that it hangs about evenly off both sides. I've experimented with O-rings and shrink-wrap tubing and other harnesses designed to hold the bait in place...but simply putting the hook through the middle of the bait works just fine.
> Part of the reason for that is that The General is made of durable plastic. It can handle lots of casts before the stress eventually becomes too much and it tears. It also has a great falling action. So it's soft and durable. Other stickworms tend to be one or the other....
> ...6' 9" MH Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Platinum Signature spinning rod and 2000 series Platinum spinning reel spooled with 10-lb Bass Pro Shops Hyper Braid 8 in yellow. I tie about 4' feet of 8- or 10-lb Bass Pro Shops 100% Fluorocarbon line to that end of that to serve as my leader.
> ...generally fish the weightless, wacky-rigged...in less than 6' of water, and I like to throw it around cover that's not so heavy you want to reach for your flipping gear.
> I cast it out and let it fall on a slack line. If you do anything more than that, you're probably overfishing the bait.
> The yellow line serves as a strike indicator. When it jumps or starts to move off, I take up the slack and lean into the fish. Don't worry, the bass is not going to let go of it....

"...in fishing, you often come up a little disappointed."
1. Does "you" mean him or us? If us, I would say yes. If him, I would say no way man.
2. "Often...a little disappointed." That makes sense for a guy with high standards. I'm a little embarrassed to say that my standards are way lower than his in fishin' and I STILL "often come up" AT LEAST "a little disappointed."
I might have bigger problems than I realized...thanks a lot Hack! 😆

Who is this targeted at, birds and wasps?? Nothin' like startin' off your day with a big juicy bug...🤢
