Diners Drive-Ins and B.A.S.S.?, it’s…prespawn?!, welterweight smallie

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Today's Top 4

1. Diners, Drive-Ins and B.A.S.S.?

Spotted as I wuz droolin' over the high-cal vittles in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives:

Ma young'ns were yellin' at me to sit down, was blockin' the almighty TV….

2. Expect bass to be in full spawning mode by Thanksgiving or perhaps a week earlier.

– From an excellent and interestin' fishin' report on FL basses. That is…awesome!

> When daily average water temps become 67-71 degrees all bass will experience reproductive triggers.

> If extended weather forecasts are even close to accurate, the majority of the bass spawn for 2013-14 could be over before the New Year.

> Remember, it's the temperature of water that triggers the seasonal bass spawn, and not the full moon. All the full moon does, is cause bass to feed more successfully at night, nothing more.

Uh…okay?

3. Smallie welterweight?

Not a lightweight or a heavyweight….

4. WWBassin'Do with Dwayne Bowe?

Chiefs wide rec'ver was arrested for speeding and pot, but not suspended so he could play in the all-important game against the Broncos. Watched that game with my kids, we had a convo about Dwayne which basically boiled down to this:

The NFL doesn't give a crap about anything except winning and money (duh!).

And then:

Thank goodness bass fishing ain't like that…right?

I mean, at least sit the guy for a half or something. WWBassin'Do – what should it do in a similar sitch? Let me know on Faceybook.

News

1. Win Howell's rig!

$100 per tix, supports a great charity, props to Randy for doing it again this year. Here's a King's Home vid with Randy:

Will be given away on Nov 24 at the Annual Kampfire For The King Event.

2. Chad Morgenthaler back in Elites.

3. New Yawkuh Elite rookie.

Joey "the hammer" Sancho:

> "I decided with the Delaware River and Cayuga Lake being on the schedule, both of which I've fished a ton of times, it would've been hard to pass it up when there's two venues I'm real familiar with."

4. PA: Someone noticed the smallie spots.

> The concern is whether the melanosis represents melanoma, which would be skin cancer in wild fish.

But the PA DEP still says nothing's wrong. Doh! (And btw: Santa, shouldn't you be too busy to fish right about now??)

5. TX: Ray Hubbard's bass better.

> Despite low water levels, this year's survey revealed record catch rates for largemouth bass over 14 inches. Incredibly, the best five fish weighed 34.62 lbs.

> Most big fish were collected along the many areas of riprap found around the lake.

6. 2014 Oakley BBT sked out.

7. Hey – I'm on BassEdge ray-dee-o!

From a BassBlaster reader: I like the fact that MegaStrike is a sponsor. I won a tube on the Texas Fishing Forum one time and now I swear by it! It's great stuff.

Tip of the Day

Ott DeFoe: Winter crankin'.

> During the colder months, Elite Series pro Ott DeFoe almost always has a crankbait of some type tied on. If he's on a lake where grass is the primary cover, he's using a lipless crankbait. If there's rock and wood, he opts for the lipped variety.

> "I've caught fish on crankbaits during the winter in water as cold as 42 or 43 degrees. You're more apt to get a reaction strike in the winter, and a crankbait is a great way to do that."

> DeFoe's go-to wintertime crankbait is a No. 5 or No. 7 Rapala Shad Rap, depending on how deep the fish are holding. The Shad Rap's tight wiggle makes it a good choice in cold water. He keys in on rock, such as gravel, riprap or chunk rock. When they're on a bank that slopes at a 45-degree angle or steeper, all the better. Natural, subtle crawdad colors get the nod.

> When it comes to lipless crankbaits. He prefers Bill Lewis' original Rat-L-Trap. He says that it has a narrower shimmy making it better for cold water. He opts for either a 1/4- or 1/2-ounce.

> On grass lakes, DeFoe looks for small ditches and depressions in the bottom.

> "Perhaps the most important thing to remember about fishing in the wintertime is that it's winter. If you're getting five or seven bites a day, you're doing pretty good."

Quote of the Day

Everything I got in trouble for in grade school is what I do.

Dave Mercer talkin' 'bout doin' his job as B.A.S.S. emcee, which Tommy Sanders says here is the hardest job on the Elite Series. He's not lyin'.

If you didn't know, Mercer also is a frickin' encyclopedia of bassin'. He's an uber-fan.
