BassBlaster

Crazy fish story, Lucas too pretty, Three best Senko rigs

If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s because a bud signed you up! Thank him by catching a bigger fish than him the next time you head out….

Today’s Top 5

Crazy fish story.

Bass-fish story, that is.

What are the odds of this happening? Keith Deal catches this 11.4-lb bass on Shearon Harris, NC on Oct 25. That’s it.

Hahaha! No really: That fish was the EXACT SAME weight as a largie his dad caught on the EXACT SAME date in 1978.

Case you think that’s freaky, check this about Keith’s catch:

> “My jig was all down in the roots of a stump when the fish hit. She was hung in the stump, and we played tug-of-war for almost a minute before I sawed the root off with my line.”

Makes as much sense as this:

#youcan’tkillrocknroll

Crazy-looking Euro bass boat.

Is that the Super Deluxe Model? If it ain’t, I ain’t innerested…. [Does that look weird in terms of where the seat is vs where the console is or is it just me?]

Back to reality in the good ol’ US of A. This Phoenix I’m pretty sure has my name written on it somewhere. (Hackney can you make a call and get this for me man??)

Mercer crushes a 30 bag on Erie.

Erie slam-festivus. Other dude is Simon Frost, a Mercer BFF and studly Erie guide.

Dave said the fish were caught in the eastern basin, 32-40 feet with a 4″ Jackall Crosstail Shad in melon copper, one of four new colors this year for the Great Lakes. “They were all drop-down fish that we marked on the graph. Every single fish was caught directly below the boat.”

Cuz they were video-game-fishing deep, they used huge 1/2- and 3/4-ox weights. Rest of the gear: 7.2 MH Shimano Crucial rod, Shimano Stella 3000 reel [awesome and only $800!!] spooled up with 10-lb Power Pro Super Slick with a 6lb test BPS fluorocarbon leader using a 1/0 Trokar dropshot hook.

Justin Lucas too pretty to be a bass-head?

Looks like it:

Take that Velvick!

lol just kiddin’ J-Lu…sorta….

Hydrilla Gnat Man!

[insert theme song here]

That’s just a temporary costume before the real one arrives:

Know what’s weird? Every time Hydrilla Gnat Man shows up, I can’t find Shaye Baker anywhere.

9. Science: We need more poop.

Yep, can’t make it up:

> Huge land animals…ate vast quantities of food, and, yes, deposited vast quantities of poop. …a new study shows that these [animals] played a vital role in keeping the planet fertile by transporting nutrients from ocean depths and spreading them….

> …the findings, put forth by an international team of nine scientists, show that as these giants they ate, excreted, and eventually died in constant motion, the nutrients in their excrement and decaying bodies moved from the depths of oceans and rivers to land surfaces, and even mountaintops. “This broken global cycle may weaken ecosystem health, fisheries and agriculture.”

Yes, correct. The planet is now devoid of poop and we are headed to sterile oblivion.

Tip of the Day

By some dude with an awesome fishing last name name, Scott “the Senko master” Hammer:

> A rig that you will always find at the top of my list is the weightless Senko, Tex-skin-rigged on a 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook. I will throw this around shoreline cover and weedlines out to around 12 feet.

> The one change I will make to this rig is to go up to a larger hook to control the sink rate and still be weightless. I rarely use the 6/0 because I feel it affects the action, and I do not use the 3/0 because it tends to deep-hook too many fish if you do not have perfect timing on your hookset.

> The second rig is exactly the same as the first except for the hook. The Gamakatsu Skip Gap hook is perfectly designed for skipping a Senko under docks while at the same time keeping the Senko properly positioned on the hook. This equals more fish on less casts and as a bonus your Senko isn’t sliding around on our hook.

> The final rig is one I said I would never use. I am a Senko purist. I believe the action of a Senko is the magic of a Senko. Although I still believe that, I have found numerous situations where a weighted Senko performs just as well as a weightless Senko.

> Fishing tournaments in Florida I was baffled by my lack of bites on a Senko. It wasn’t until I teamed up with a Florida river fisherman that I was shown why. Current and tide are huge factors there and I simply could not keep a weightless Senko in the strike zone. The solution was a Bullet Weights screw-in weight. [Here’s the Lunkerhunt version on Tackle Warehouse.]

> I used the same Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG hook but rigged with a little more of the bait forward so that the screw in didn’t impact the hook. The key is to use the lightest weight possible. I use this rig now for rivers, deep fishing, windy days, punching grass or whenever the conditions warrant.

That’s all he wants to spend his money on.
