Congress Goes Head2Head With Antis

Well lookee here. A little late to this party, but maybe you’re in the same boat:

Somewhat on the heels of the recent attempt by antis to ban lead ammunition and fishing tackle (again), a few of the rocket scientists who allegedly represent us in DC (yep, not a fan of those folks) have decided to try and stop such end-runs.

Before getting into the deets, a few facts:

> The label “antis” can be used for all green and animal rights groups, which various studies and even books have shown to be the same crowd of angry-at-society, disaffected or just plain dumb (celebs) folks.

> It’s also been shown that these Fruit Loops are out to effect social change – meaning, in this case, not just stop lead use but to stop hunting and fishing.

> When the idiots who are bankrupting our country do something that seems good, you can bet they’re doing it for their own purposes first and foremost (e.g., reelection). But I guess us commoners will take whatever crumbs fall of their table.

Now here are the facts on the legislation:

> The chairs of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus – Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and John Thune (R-SD) and Representatives Jeff Miller (R-FL) and Mike Ross (D-AR) –  introduced the Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Sports Protection Act (S. 838 and H.R. 1558) to help ensure that any future regulations on ammo and tackle happen because of scientific data, not end-run petitions.

> The goal behind the legislation is to prevent the burgeoning number of petitions and lawsuits designed to force hunters and anglers to use expensive lead-free fishing tackle and ammunition. The verbiage in both bills amends the Toxic Substances Control Act to “clarify the jurisdiction of the Environmental Protection Agency with respect to certain sporting good articles, and to exempt those articles from a definition under that Act.”

> Last year, the EPA dismissed a petition filed by several organizations seeking to ban the manufacture and trade of lead fishing tackle and ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control Act because the petitioners did not demonstrate that such a ban is “necessary to protect against an unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment.”

> Despite the EPA’s clear ruling, the petitioners continue to attempt to push the ban by filing a lawsuit to force the EPA to regulate lead fishing tackle and ammunition

> Basically, the position of the bills is that science needs to support the desired policy. Science doesn’t seem to indicate a need for such a ban.

Potentially good news. Let’s just hope they get the support they need from the rest of Congress to pass the legislation. Living in one of the “bluest” states in the nation I am not very optimistic about how those from my neck of the woods will vote, but time will tell. It is truly unfortunate that science has slowly been taking a back seat to the emotional approach to all thing by these all-to-well funded extremists whose only interest is to satisfy their own personal agendas.
