Brauer Goes 5 Hours: How ‘Bout You?

(BASS photo)

I was surfing around the Strike King site again, this time found a few Denny Brauer nuggets. One is this:

Sometimes I change lures because I’m not getting bites. If I’m fishing a particular lure religiously for 4 or 5 hours that I think the bass should be biting, but don’t get a bite, I’ll swap lures.

Four or 5 hours?! Dang!

Do you have nerves of titanium like that? Can you wall off your doubting/gotta-catch-’em brain like that?

That’s so foreign to me I find myself doubting Denny’s words – like, is he pulling our legs or what?

Obviously not, so…

…which of you out there can stick with something that long?

I’m not talking about waiting for the water to start moving or the wind to pick up or whatever. I mean a flip or cast every couple of seconds and you’re thinking on every cast you’re going to get bit…but don’t.

I think its just being stubborn, if i know a lure works at a lake i will try and force feed it to them for hours. Usually Ill look back and kick myself in the butt for not changing earlier. But i feel good seeing Denny say that lol

If I’m committed to a particular bite, either because of the quality it will produce to win, or because I’m just out fun fishing, I can do 4-5 hours with a single bait, no problem. Most times though, 30-60 minutes max is all I need to know it ain’t going to happen for a particular bait.

I’m a junkie. I couldn’t imagine fishing one bait that long. Unless the bite’s strong and I’m stroking them. That rarely happens on public water around here due to more than a fair share of fishing pressure.

If I fish 4 or 5 Lures for 1 hour and don’t get a bite, I usually give up! Then again, I ain’t fishin’ for a livin’. I would just soak a worm the rest of the day.

In my opinion, Denny hasn’t really done that well in the past 10 years, especially in the Elite Series Era. The game has changed so much; simply flipping isolated cover every tourney doesn’t cut it anymore. So I feel that you can’t be stubborn about a particular bait or techniqe especially if you’re not getting bit, even if it is your strength. Have you ever heard of Denny throwing a drop shot, swimbait, square bill, shakey head, etc? KVD throws all those. Guys that win on a regular basis make it a point to master the latest techniqes, showing the fish something different. And more importantly, they recognize when to bail on a non-productive bait/pattern. If you don’t, the rest of the field will pass you by.
