7 lb smallie, Christie’s secret highland bait, Ogre melons of the week

If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s because a bud signed you up!

Today’s Top 5

Potential new SD record smallie.

</>
Bulbous! (That’s for you Mercer.) Probly seen pics of this, but here are some deets: Caught on an A-rig (word is it was a YUMbrella) by MN resident Lyal Held on Horseshoe Lake. 7-03, which would break the existing record by 3 oz — 19″ long with a 19″ girth.

> [He and bud Casey Ehlert] had been scouting, studying and fishing Horseshoe Lake for 3 years. They began after reading that the previous state record was caught in the lake in October 2013.

> “Casey’s…spent a lot of time looking at it and figuring out good-looking spots. We’ve spent a lot of time fishing over there and had some bad days. We kind of found a honey hole. Good friend of ours caught a 6-lber last fall and actually Casey caught two personal bests this morning before I got the record.”

Ogre melons of the week.

RAAAAAAAAARR:

11.2 lbs of Shrek green caught on the Dali Delta with a Berkley Havoc Flat Dawg (Senko-like):

No weight given but fo sho a DD at 27 7/8 inches long with a 20 9/16-inch girth, caught I believe out of a Delaware pond on — get this — a Rebel crawfish crank. THIS is how you hold a fish for a fotergraf yo:

10.3 on Lewisville, TX, caught on a Texas-rigged Senko. Dude said, “I literally dropped it right on her head and watched her eat it:”

Not quote a DD, but BB reader Jerry N. whacked this 9.6 plus some pals on 3/4-oz Knock-N-Traps (Rayburn red) on Gibson County Lake, TN:

136 10+ basses weighed on T-Bend…
…over the past 12 months. That’s the word, anyhow. Here’s #136:

If that # is true, it’s Moo Thunder yo!

Clear Lake Costa weener and baits.
Todd “Tiger wishes he was me” Woods crushed it last weekend at the Clear Lake, CA Costa-o-Start, winning by 7 big LBs. What he did:

> A mile-long stretch of shoreline on the west side of the lake produced most of Woods’ winning fish. It was a sloping gravel bank with several rock piles providing cover. …shad were spawning in the area…prespawn bass were staging in the area and feeding up on the spawning shad.

> “I’d switch between a swimbait and an umbrella rig. I’d work the swimbait up shallow and use the umbrella rig in the deeper water.” Woods used long casts parallel to the shoreline.

> …a hitch-colored Basstrix Paddle Tail swimbait on a 3/8-oz gold Blade-Runner underspin in shallow water, and a YUM YUMbrella Flash Mob umbrella rig with 4″ Basstrix Swimbaits on 3/8-oz jigheads on top and a 5″ swimbait with a 1/4-oz jighead on bottom.

But the most amazing thing about his fishing was — LOOKIT THOSE PANTS:

Top 10 Clear Lake bait stuff.
Among all top 10 finishers:

> Swimbaits = 40%
> Underspins = 30%
> Yamamoto plastics = 30%
> YUMbrella rigs = 20%

5th-place Hunter Schlander was the other guy to toss a YUMbrella Flash Mob but with Keitechs (rainbow shad):

> Sight-fishing = 20%
> Keitech Fats = 20%
> Jigs = 10%
> Dropshot = 10%
> Bladed jig = 10%
> Topwater = 10%

Craziest bait goes to 8th-place finisher Garrett Dixon, who made this rat and got his big bites on it:

Dude! It looks so…realistic? A perfect imitation of the white-butted rat? Anyhow, check how short he cut his froggie legs.

News

1. Check out BP’s cloud shorts.

Last year (or was it 2014?) plaid shorts surfaced on the Elites. Now this:

As long as bike shorts stay gone it’s all good.

2. What Skeet and Herren used for the ping-pong.

Bull Shoals/Norfork. Skeet was 2nd, Matt was 4th.

Skeet fished (L to R): a Berkley Havoc Pit Boss (gp) on a 5/0 Laser TroKar flipping hook with a 1/4-oz tungsten weight; a Lucky Craft squarebill on one of his glass rods; and a 6″ Berkley PowerBait Hollow Belly and a 5/0 Laser TroKar 1/4-oz weighted swimbait hook.

Herren fished dos baitos: A 3/8-oz Santone M Series Jig (river bream) with a root beer chunk (at least I think that’s what his text said lol — Herren?) fished in bushes on Bull and steep channel-swing banks on Norfork; and Reaction Innovations Pocket Rockets fished wacky in flat pockets.

Tip of the Day

…for Ozark lakes, which as BassGold shows will also work on all highland reservoirs because all water bodies of the same type fish the same:

Quote of the Day

We grew up in [Los Angeles] around the boys in the ‘hood, where there was a lot of bad stuff going on. He didn’t want us involved in the gangs.

– Clear Lake Costa winner Todd “boys in the” Wood talkin‘ ’bout his dad:

> The elder Woods, a bus driver, asked a co-worker who fished to introduce his sons to the sport. The man took the kids to Lake Piru, where they caught some big redear sunfish, and Todd was instantly captivated.

Gotta give it up to Todd’s old man:

Shot of the Day
