Little context: Couple weeks ago Brandon went a-huntin' goats on Kodiak Island, AK, aka the land of giant grizzlies. Here we go:
1. Was it hard to say you were hunting billies with nannies and kids without laughing at first?
> "[Laughs] It does take a little bit of thought process because I've never hunted anything else that is referred to as that. So it does catch you off guard a little bit. But after getting to watch them and watch their demeanors, it kinda starts to make sense.
> "When you see the kids jumping around and playing and running around...every once in a while a nanny will reach over there and kind of slap 'em...it all makes sense."
2. What fishing stuff do you think about when you're hunting? And don't say you don't because I know that's not true!
> "[Laughs] A lot of times for me, when I'm hunting it's kind of a reset on perspective.
> "It's really easy to look at the sport that we love and all have so much passion for, and turn small things or small issues into bigger things than what they actually are – and forget how lucky a lot of us are, even if it's not exactly going the way we want it to.
> "So for me, a lot of times when I'm hunting – especially when I don't have cell service and am just out there in the fresh air – my mind tends to drift to a lot of that stuff. Resetting perspective, being thankful.
> "And then I think like, How can I make a positive impact? What ways can we make a positive impact? Because you don't have any distractions out there, so you're able to think clearly on stuff."
3. What do you think about Humminbird MEGA Live 2 so far – as good as Garmin with the 34 or...?
> "My honest opinion is that there are places that ML2 seems better. I also have to preface it – I haven't spent a lot of time with Garmin, so I don't know it as well as some guys. But...there's probably some things that Garmin's still a little better at.
> "...what I've noticed just since it's launched...there's so many people that want to take a Garmin image and compare it to an ML2 image when they're not in the same conditions. Doesn't matter what make or model it is, there will be some conditions that FFS technology performs better or worse in.
> "What you would see on the water right now would be lesser performance than you would see in the summer months. Anytime you get a colder, denser water...doesn't matter the brand, it's gonna take a hit.
> "The reason I stuck with Humminbird the entire time – ML2 is proof of why I stuck with them even though the first version [ML1] wasn't as good. I believe in the people that are there. Even if they don't have an immediate solution to a problem, generally they can figure it out or do it better.
> "What they have done with the technology they have built from the ground up is super impressive. ...I can track my bait way better, and the amount of noise on the screen is way [less].
> "They did a really good job in the short amount of time they have been in the FFS game. They haven't been doing it as long and are already on par."
4. Seems like a bunch of folks are getting into BKK hooks now. You were one of the first – what do you like about 'em?
> "I love their attention to detail. ...if you think about the new OCD Box and how well of a thought-out system that is – it's not like, Here's a box and some little containers you can put in it. It's designed all the way from the retail packaging to what goes into your boat. That forethought process....
> "They're building all that stuff in-house. So they have the ability to control tolerances, quality control, and the speed at which they can work on new, innovative products is second to none."
> "...you get as much bang for your buck as you can possibly get."
5. Did you have to adjust your knot at all when using that new real thin Seaguar PEX8 Braid?
> "I tie a crazy Alberto knot, so when I do that I just add a few more wraps. It's so thin and smooth that it requires a couple extra wraps to get it to really seat well, but the knot still ends up being smaller than it would be with a different braid."
Bonus Q: What was that sneaky bait you were using at Smith?
> "That's called a Megabass Makippa. It's kind of like a tailspin – it's designed for saltwater fishing. I has front single hooks and a single hook on the back.... I take the front hooks off, tie my line to that and put a small treble on the bottom.
