Zell not in Elites?, print your own frog, Yelas too shallow?

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Today's Top 5

1. Zell still not in Elites?

> Elite Series pros that finished in 91st place through 100th place in the final 2013 Angler Of the Year point standings are all on the outside looking in and have not received an invitation to fish the Elites in 2014. They include: Jamie Horton, Zell Rowland, Clark Reehm, Kelley Jaye, Matt Greenblatt, Grant Goldbeck, Kevin Ledoux, BJ Haseotes, Dave Smith, and Chip Porche.

> “It’s a process that is not complete,” said B.A.S.S. tournament director Trip Weldon. “There are 102 anglers who have accepted and paid their deposit, and there are still three (Elite Series) invitations out that are not due until November 26.”

2. It's amazing to be able to take a concept, computer program it, cut it and be fishing with it that afternoon.

Gary Klein talkin' 'bout creatin' baits with the fish-heads (haha!) in Berkley R&D.

> On why his fishing might not have been as good the last couple o' years: "Let's just say I've been more involved than most over the last couple years with the Major League Fishing project."

Word is Gary got so ticked at the show "[Not] Finding Bigfoot," he's been spending a bunch o' time in TX in the woods taking shots like this one:

That's the reason behind the Jack Link's sponsorship of MLF…maybe.

Reminds me of this recent headline:
Naked Man Claiming to Be a Descendent of Sasquatch Attacks Hunter

3. Print your own frog!

Guess with these 3D printers, why not create some baits?

4. Yelas a shallow guy.

Jay is one of the greatest guys in bassin' imo – "shallow" refers to:

I will go at least 8' deep, the depth of my Kistler Flipping Stick.

He was respondin' to a question on the WFN FB page whether he ever fishes deeper than 6'. Also said:

> Really though, I will fish at any depth the fish are at. Though sometimes my friends like to give me a hard time because I stay shallow more than most guys on Tour.

Dude who asked the question: former tour-level pro and Great Lakes smallie guide Art Ferguson.

5. As seen on Wired2Fish…

Reminds me of that old Seinfeld "the bro" episode:

1. Fish with BP sweepstakes.

And just in case you're wonderin' what the heck is a sweepstake:

> Word origin: From Middle English swepestake one who wins all the stakes in a game. First Known Use: 1774.

Trivia: 1774 is when the Buffalo Bills last had a winning season. Here's a shot of their special teams practice:

2. B.A.S.S.: Bassin' for beginners.

Excellent idea.

3. SC: David Dudley in Seneca this Saturday.

> …will be on hand to sign autographs and answer questions Saturday, Nov. 16 at the grand opening of the Castrol Premium Lube Express located at 830 By Pass 123 in Seneca, SC.

4. UT changes head-scratchin' regs.

> Currently, the daily bag limit and the possession limit are the same. For example, if you catch four trout and then put them in your freezer at home, you can't catch and keep any more trout until you've eaten at least one of the fish.

> If you eat one fish, you can go out and catch one more. If you eat two fish, you can go out and catch two more. If you eat all four fish, you can go out and catch another four-trout limit.

> Starting Jan. 1, the possession limit will be twice the daily limit at most fishing waters in Utah.

5. Sponsor re-ups for Cabela's Collegiate Bassin'.

From a BassBlaster reader: I like the fact that MegaStrike is a sponsor. I won a tube on the Texas Fishing Forum one time and now I swear by it! It's great stuff.

Tip of the Day

Randall Tharp: Fishing fall fronts.

> "With each gradual drop in water temperature, it gets harder and harder to catch them."

> "As the water starts to cool, a lot of the bait likes to get shallow and the bass like to follow them. Regardless of a front coming through, that's not going to change where I'm fishing [shallow]."

> "The fish will bury down tighter to cover and won't be chasing bait as much. If you were on a reaction-type bite with a crankbait or spinnerbait, you might have to flip or just fish really slow."

> Finding shallow cover becomes the key to catching bass after a fall cold front. "If I'm on a body of water full of grass, then that's what I'm going to key on because that's one of my strengths. But if I'm on Lake Norman or some other place that's full of boat docks or on a lake with wood cover that's shallow in the back of a creek, that's what I'm going to key on."

Quote of the Day

I probably caught the majority of my fish less than a mile from the boat ramp.

– Hank Cherry, from an interview I did with him for the upcoming Bass Quest mag. Also said:

> "The long run thing has never been part of my fishing game. I want to spend my time fishing, not running."
