Today's Top 5

1. Z goin' for broke(back) with A-A-Ron?

This how they say yo in Chicago, Z?

2. 7-lb GA spot!

Carter's Lake, caught in 20' on a Big Bite Real Deal Craw and stand-up jighead with 12-lb Sunline Sniper Fluorocarbon.

3. Elites ticked about '14 payout.

Notably paying half of 41st-50th, even with a bigger field, but B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin had some good answers:

> "It's controversial because (a $10,000 paycheck) seems to be kind of the magic number – it covers not only entry fees, but also expenses. But if you're shooting for 41st through 50th place in a tournament, it's possible that your goals might not be high enough."

> "Anytime you make change, people tend to focus only on the parts they perceive as negatively affecting them and you never hear anything about things like the additional Classic spots. We think it all kind of ties together."

Article goes into BASSfest:

> "There's a lot about the summer Classics that people miss because they planned vacations around it and it was a big family event, and it served as kind of an annual meeting where B.A.S.S. members could come together. We can't recreate the [summer] Classic, but maybe we can create a big event that emulates parts of it."

Not taking sides here, but I like the fact that B.A.S.S. is trying new stuff. Might not be the right stuff, but they are trying. That said, we gotta take care of the pro fishermen. For many, it's very tough. Way worse than it looks out there.

4. Landscapin' for bass.

I'm a landscape architect, so I do the design work, and my brother does the installation. Let me know if you want to update your landscape.

Brandon Card. Just in case you think if you're on the Elites, you've "made it" – hence the angst from the Elites about the payout….

Pretty sure the Cards are not responsible for this landscaping erroneousness – can anyone confirm?

5. What Cliff Pace just got.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!

Tip of the Day

Randy Howell: Fall crankin'.

> Shad and other baitfish will be migrating from main lake channels and other deep summer locations…into the major creeks and bigger bays. Bass will be following the baitfish, and will be spending a great deal of time suspended off the bottom.

> I start out by searching the mouths of bays and creeks, slowing up well before I enter these areas. I scan the surface for baitfish activity. Diving birds…are another positive sign. If I don’t see anything on the surface, I will idle into the area while watching my Lowrance side and down imaging for clouds of bait.

> Once I’ve located an area where baitfish are present, I will start fan casting a chrome/blue back Pro Ripper lipless crankbait. I work this slow-sinking bait with a fast retrieve, covering mid-depth water quickly.

> I’m making long casts…trying to keep my lure far from the boat so I don’t spook the baitfish….

> If I notice that my bites are coming close to the shoreline or near cover then I’ll switch to the Dive Master Jr. squarebill crankbait which runs 2-5’ deep.
