You Can Troll A-Rig in FOM Derbies?

Seems like everyone’s buzzin’ about B.A.S.S. banning the A-Rig from the Elite Series and Classic – no other trails. The line that stood out for me was this one:

An unidentified angler member went so far as to say that using an Alabama Rig takes all the skill out bass fishing. “It doesn’t matter how you work it. The fish can’t help themselves.”

If I was Mann’s, I’d be buying billboards with that line. Holy cow, you can’t buy that kinda publicity.

Would also love to know which pro felt that way.

To stay with today’s theme, ran across this recently. Check it, Rule 10 from the Fishers of Men team trail rules:

10. TACKLE AND FISHING METHODS

Only artificial baits may be used. No live or cut bait is permitted (pork baits are permitted). All bass must be caught alive in a legal and sporting manner. No snagging. Each competitor may only use 1 rod at a time. No more than 1 line in the water at a time per angler. Trolling with the combustion motor is not permitted. No competitor may leave the boat to land or catch fish.

“Trolling with the combustion motor is not permitted.” So does that mean trolling with the electrical motor – the, uh, “trolling motor” – is? And if so, are we gonna see some A-riggers in FOM derbies doing same?

Any FOM competitors out there have an opin-onion on this?

My guess is it was KVD but right before he said “they just can’t help themselves” he gave that half chuckle he always does when he’s about to unleash a line of bull or sales pitch.

The rule is probably there because some like to drift or “stroll” c-rigs, football jigs versus casting. Seems like it came up in the CPA before.

Straight from the inside, the A-Rig was banned because of sponsors. If you make swim baits or A-Rigs, it’s great. if you make crank baits or spinner baits, or worms you were about to be screwed. Unidentified pros in the meetings straight out said the 5 out of the 8 events would have been won on it. They’d sell like crazy but unless you sell swimbaits or jig heads it would destroy the sales of everything else.

    Ahhh the A-Rig:

    1) As far as the B.A.S.S ban: “the A-Rig was banned because of sponsors.” ??? WRONG! Had absolutely nothing to do with it! It wasn’t a “new” rule. Just an old rule they finally decided to enforce.

    2) The circuits are “PRIVATELY” owned and can do whatever they want along as it doesn’t violate a state/federal law. Don’t like the rules? DON’T fish the circuit.

    3) “Alabama Rig takes all the skill out bass fishing. “It doesn’t matter how you work it. The fish can’t help themselves.” More bologna

    4) FOM, “Trolling an A-Rig”? See #2 above.

    5) Don’t care if it’s allowed or not.
