Who’s Got Their Fingers Xd for Lake Mich?

Re: the whole secret lake thing, which was kinda fun btw. I read somewhere that B.A.S.S. has never held a tournament on Lake Michigan. Technically that’s correct, meaning: Even though the 2000 Bassmaster Classic was held there, the wind blew so it became a mad scramble to find basses of any size anywhere else.

And, if I remember right, Woo Daves and his 70 shirt patches (lol – love ya Woo!) won it basically junk-fishing in a canal somewhere. Okay, just found this on BassGold.com: “Daves fished a Zoom tube 6-lb line around an abandoned seawall in front of Chicago’s Sears Tower.”

His winning weight: 27-13, or an average of 9-04 a day.

Wowwwwwwwwwww.

Btw, in case you miss Woo’s long-winded sponsor rundowns, his sponsors at the time were: Tracker Marine, Mercury, Zebco, Quantum, MotorGuide, Hendrick Motor Sports, Flowmaster, Diehard Batteries, Zoom, Stren, Strike Zone Lures, Gator Grip Measuring Boards, Plano, Jack’s Juice and Striker Jigs.

Lol.

Now where was I…oh yeah, the wind. The battle of giant smallie sacks that was supposed to be pure awesomeness at the 2000 Classic never happened because of strong winds. Strong-enough winds that even the nuttiest of the pros either wouldn’t brave the weather or couldn’t catch ’em if they got out in the lake a bit.

One example: Mark Rizk, who finished 2nd using the new-at-the-time dropshot rig, had the heaviest day 3 limit: 10 pounds.

Whoop-dee-doo.

That woulda/shoulda/coulda been just two lake fish.

So that’s why I have my fingers crossed about Lake Michigan. If not, the tourney may turn into another rinky-dink fest. Or maybe not: There’s a lot more info out there now.

> In case your wondering, that wasn’t the lightest Classic-winning weight. In 2005 it took just 12-15 for KVD to win at Pittsburgh, less than 4.5 lbs per day.

I just spoke with a guy that fished a big smally fest a few weeks ago in the same waters the Elite are going at Gren Bay. He claims that it took 63 lbs for ten fish for two days to win. This basser caught 28lbs the first day with the favorable 4ft chop, but bombed when there was no wind the 2nd day. He watched the champs catch their big stringer when he was returning from his spot about 45 mi north of Green Bay. He claims they were dropshotting very light hair jigs somewhere 20 mi north of Green Bay. (Must be a Yankee deal…never heard of it before)

I would like to see them do it on Grand Traverse Bay. There’s so much connecting water to fish that no matter the weather you would still need massive weights to be in contention.

There will be over 20lbs a day caught by close to 1/3 the field. Even if the wind blows up in the bay, for the most part they mainly only get 2-3ft with 4′ and the very rare 5′ waves present. Totally manageable for most of the pros.

You will see that little sturgeon bay and larson’s reef will give up the heaviest bags. 23-24lbs a day a real goal that can be accomplished.

WOOOO! re: Chicago 2000 Classic. The city blew it when they made all the harbors and other areas “off limits”. Instead of spectators and other out of town visitors having a front row seat to the Big Show, most of us got to see the weigh-ins and a few guys fishing the river downtown and that was it. I can easily see a 25lb bag being caught here now if ol’ Mama Nature stays quiet. They are gonna have a good time up in Wisconsin if the wind is mild, but oh boy if she’s a blowin’! Let’s just say that the guys can sell sponsor space on the bottom of their boats… up there I once saw a guy’s boat perpendicular to the water.

Oh yeah, at the sports show when he was Classic Champ, Woo was the one that first introduced me to the Carolina Keepers you posted last week. A TRUE gentleman.

The winds can blow just as bad in Green Bay..

The idiots at the WDNR made some of the best spots off limits. Well done guys. Way to showcase your fishing to about 50% of it’s potential….

It really stinks the Wisc DNR is so closed minded on tournaments. It took a state law to get culling. Now this…. The tourism board ought to get involved.
