What’s the Next Buck Perry Nuts Thang?

This is nuts, but ain't "it."

Buck Perry is the father of “structure fishing,” a term and concept that anglers of the time (the 1940s, I believe) dismissed as nuts.

“Nuts,” they said about his concept of fish relating to structure and doing things like moving between deep and shallow water.

They also thought he was nuts for trolling so fast in his 16-ft tin boat with a 10 hp motor.

A whole 10-er!

Times shore have changed, and for shore some fishermen have been branded nuts over the years for their takes on things, be it techniques or baits.

My question is: What’s the next (or even current) bassin’ thing people think is nuts…but turns out not to be?

> Is it the HydroWave (Biosonics-like) unit?

> Is it some bait most of us bassin-heads haven’t heard of yet but maybe you have?

> Is it boats made out of plastic? Or 325 hp motors?

What, ladies and gents, is the next nuts? Drop your pearls of wisdom below.

> People thought Ray Scott was nuts for starting B.A.S.S. The Lindners were nuts for launching a technical multi-species magazine called In-Fisherman. And if I may put myself in their company for a sec, everyone thought I was nuts for starting BassFan. (I’m getting a similar reaction about FishingGold.com, which I’m figuring is a good sign….)

> Buck was born in 1915 and as of 2005 is fishing for golden bass up yonder.

I think what is being considered nuts by some that is already happening is the AIM walleye tour. I don’t think it’s nuts, but those who resist change think it is.

When Ray Scott started “Don’t kill your catch”, diehard catch-and-kill anglers thought he was nuts. Now, almost everyone releases their bass, or at least practices “selective harvest”.

AIM realised that state regs prevented them from having end-of-day weigh-in and from keeping the true biggest 5 walleye of the day, so they have an immediate catch-weigh-photo-release format. The side benefits are virtually no fish mortality from being dragged around the lake for up to 8 hours in a livewell, and they are put back EXACTLY where they were caught.

For peopel who truly care about not killing their catch, even if it means they can’t hoist them up to a cheering crowd back at the weigh-in ceremoney, it’s the way to go.

Next on the nuts radar will be a fully electric bass boat… no gas. Replace the gas tank with a battery pack and the powerhead with an electric motor. Again, I don’t think it’s nuts, but the masses may.
