Weekend GIANTS!, Fence Panda ent., Football jiggin’

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Make sure you're a-follerin' Strike King on Faceybook if yer not already!

Today's Top 4

1. Falcon, TX: 15.37 lbs.

Bruce Benedict, caught at the Bass Champs derby there – and it DIDN'T WIN BIG FISH!! (Wait…yes it did.)

Fried in corn meal. (Wait…no it wasn't.)

2. Toledo Bend, TX, 12.86 lbs.

Jared Adams, Feb. 9 (okay, not this weekend but NICE):

> “…the fish wouldn’t budge off the bottom and was swimming left and right for well over a minute.”

> …one of the eyes on his rod had broken late that morning, and as a result, his only Rat-L-Trap of the color he was catching them on landed 25 feet up in a tree…. After lunch, Adams literally climbed the tree up to get the lure that later caught the Toledo Bend trophy bass of his life.

> Adams decided to keep the bass for a skin mount since it was the biggest one he had ever caught, and because he had released all other large fish that day (including a 7 and a 9).

Dang, man, get a REPLICA!!

3. Chickamauga, TN: 49-lb bag??

You tell me. Guide Rogne Brown again. Word is also several 3-fish 20-lb bags there in a recent derby. The Chick!

4. Fence Panda…Entertainment.

Since we's on the subject of hawgs, one o' the most-quoted – and utterly random – big-bass terms wuz given to the world by the one and only Z-train: "fence panda"…which leads me to my bud Vic's new recoding co:

Hahaha! Now THAT's a bassin' head!

Tip of the Day

Alton Jones: Footballin'.

> A football jig’s unique head shape is the difference maker in cold water. “Think about a football rolling around on a patch of grass,” Jones said. “There’s no possible way to predict where it’s going to go. The same thing happens with a football jig."

> “Football jigs are meant to cover large amounts of water in a short amount of time. You can make very long casts with it, it falls quickly and you can retrieve it rapidly…."

> “The larger surface area of a football jig’s head transmits vibration to your rod tip very well. So much of winter fishing revolves around the detection of hard bottom compositions…."

> “Whenever I’m fishing ledges, whether they’re located in a river or creek, I’m constantly looking for stretches in which the bottom is harder than surrounding areas. Whenever I feel it ticking across a hard bottom, I make a waypoint because that’s when you’ll get bit.”

> “I always try to make the longest cast I possibly can. It’s hard to make yourself do it if you’re used to traditional fishing styles, but these long casts are instrumental to covering water and locating groups of aggressive bass.”

> "After I let my football jig sink all the way to the bottom, I want to reel it—not drag it—as fast as I can while keeping contact with the bottom. You’ll be amazed how much a fast, steady retrieve will increase your success."

Quote of the Day

Looking back, it was a pretty lofty goal and, to some people, appeared to be unrealistic.

AL's Coby Carden, B.A.S.S. Nation Classic qualifier, talkin' 'bout the goal he and former team tourney partner Jamie Horton had of each making the Classic, which has happened!

That's:
