Velvick’s record broken, 3 30-lb limits, Rigid overboard

Today's Top 5

1. Velvick's record broken…

…on Clear Lake, CA. Velveeta caught 15 fish for 83-05 at a 2000 Bassmaster Invitational there. Last weekend Ryan Habernich and Robert Thornton caught 15 for 90.34 at the Future Pro Classic there.

Pics don't git much better'n this…I guess:

> They were in 4th place at the end of the first day of the tournament with 27.52 pounds. They jumped to 3rd after day 2 with a total of 54.56 pounds. On Sunday, they came to the scales with 35.78 pounds to take the win. They received a new Ranger bass boat valued at $35,000.

> They stayed in the north end of the lake between the State Park to Lakeport. They used a wide verity of lures, including swimbaits, the "A" rig, ChatterBaits and jigs.

2. 3rd consecutive 30s limit.

On the CA Delta:

> March 8, this past Saturday, Jamond Andrews and his 2014 U.S. Angler's Choice West Delta team partner Harvey Pulliam put together 35.99 that included two fish over 8 1/2….

> Nearly to the day on March 9, 2013, Andrews and WON Bass Delta Teams partner Mark Daniels Jr., bested the field with 37.44. The year prior on April 7, 2012, the same pair reeled in 36.56 for another championship during an Angler's Choice event.

3. …a bummer watching how I missed some of the most obvious stuff.

Skeet Reese talkin' 'bout how he felt watchin' the Classic coverage. Love the transparency, man.

4. 10 years of Chattering.

Cool piece by Stevie "I am so" Wright about the 10-year anniversary of the ChatterBait. Congrats to the Davises, who also invented this, where the bait name came from:

Highlights fer me:

> On Jan. 7, 2006, Brian Thrift of Shelby, N.C., won a Stren Series event at Lake Okeechobee using the ChatterBait. "Four of the Top 10 guys in the next FLW tournament were using it and in less than two weeks we had orders for 500,000 baits."

We covered the snot outta that new bait back in the BassFan days, wuz cool to see how sales took off.

> Despite that success, the ChatterBait was on the verge of being labeled a gimmick…. As one angler said, "It's the best bait that everyone owns and nobody throws."

Sounds incredible now, but man bass-heads are a skeptical bunch!

I still have a few in that original packaging. Must be worth…a couple bucks. I ain't sellin'!

5. Rigid goes overboard.

Can appreciate the boat/trailer/vehicle lights. But thees eez too much mang:

Okay… wuz somethin' done for a bassin' vid game.

Uh-oh:

> Researchers documented for the first time last year that grass carp had spawned successfully in the Great Lakes, based on an analysis of four fish captured in Ohio’s Sandusky River, a tributary of Lake Erie.

5. Update on Pickwick 12-lber.

Caught on a Strike King 6XD in citrus shad:

Tip of the Day

Keith Combs: How to treat fluoro.

> If you throw into the wind or anything like that, you’ll occasionally get a small little loop in your line. With any type of fluorocarbon, you have to get that loop out immediately. You cannot reel over it because a hard bend anywhere in fluorocarbon basically ruins the entire spool.

> “I know most guys are going to take that loop out right away, but from my experience as a fishing guide, I have also seen when anglers will cast with that little loop in there and I can hear it in their spool – that little tick, tick, tick and I tell them, ‘If that’s fluorocarbon you’re going to ruin the entire spool because you’re bending that, you’re making it bend when you reel over it with that next layer of line, it presses down so hard it will ruin fluorocarbon line.’”

> You have to train yourself if you get any kind of little loop in there, take your time and take it out right then because the advantages of fluorocarbon – sensitivity, strength, depth, deflection – outweigh that one little issue.

Quote of the Day

You shouldn’t get fooled by realistic looks or fancy packaging.
