Velvick wins for Skeet, Christie’s rod pizza, Nets on TN River?

Today’s Top 5

Okay not 100% true but:

> His plan didn’t work. So instead, he just followed the lead of his friend and roommate on the tour, Byron Velvick.

> “Byron turned me on to a bait, and it evolved into something special, a win.”

> “You’ve got to help your friends out,” said Velvick. “You’ve got to be honest with the guys you fish with.”

> “I felt like a NASCAR guy with extra tires in my trailer, and my driving partner needed tires to win the race. Even though I was in the race, too, if I couldn’t win it, there was no one else I’d rather see win.”

He was in the race too?? Byron finished 2nd, 4 lbs (1 Gville fish) behind Skeet.

Word is Skeet was taking lessons from this guy in the offseason:

Seriously, Byron is an ace dude. Skeet will crush your hopes and dreams, and look good doing it…. = competitor! But Skeet named the trophy “Byron” so I guess that’s cool.

Basstrix takes top 2.

Hahahaha! Okay, now to how Skeet-Byron-Reese-Velvick caught ’em, from Bassmaster.com:

> Reese spent most of his week fishing in or near Siebold Creek, targeting a variety of shallow and mid-range structure along the banks and on offshore flats. He used the [7″ Basstrix] swimbait in “ayu,” and he believes he caught fish from all phases of the spawn….

> …the bait had to be fished painfully slow. “There was so much fishing pressure on the lake that you had to get the bait down to them and slow-roll it to get the bite. Around the shallow laydowns, they were a little more aggressive. But once the bait got out a little deeper, you had to really slow it down.”

> Velvick…spent a lot of time fishing the Basstrix Swimbait around Guntersville’s many bridges [but] wasn’t quite as consistent as Reese….

Best of the rest…

…at the Gville Elite, accordin’ to Bassin’Fan.com:

3rd: Derek Remitz

> Mostly a Chatterbait, 3/8- or 1/2-oz (baby bass) with Reaction Innovations Little Dipper (bad shad green), on 16- or 20-lb Sunline Reaction FC fluorocarbon.

> “There’s something about it that’s great for the grass – it aggravates the fish that are still in there and makes them bite it.”

4th: David Walker

> Also mostly a Chatterbait, 1/2-oz (bold bream) with a 4″ Z-Man DieZel MinnowZ trailer. Fished it on a 7′ 1″ G. Loomis GLX Jig and Worm rod (3 power) with a Shimano Chronarch reel (7:1 ratio) and 20-lb Sunline Super FC Sniper fluorocarbon.

> He used a black Sharpie pen to darken the blade of the Chatterbait. “I was more interested in getting the fish to think of it as a bluegill nest-raider rather than something to eat.

5th: Keith Combs

> Sounds like Keith basically junk-fished deep with: Strike King 6XD crank and the new Strike King 8.0 magnum squarebill (both Tennessee shad); 1/2-oz Strike King Pure Poison bladed jig with a 4″ Strike King Caffeine Shad (gp); and Strike King Shadalicious swimbait (blue herring) on a 1-oz Buckeye Lures jighead.

> Used his signature Power Tackle rods and Shimano Curado reels (6.3:1)…because they’re awesome man!

> “I think I did a good job of when something wasn’t working anymore, I tried something else.” Si!

Here’s Keef’s 6XD, from a great Shayke n Bayker photo gallery (good job Shayke):

Suuuuure allowing nets back on the Tennessee River is definitely smart. #infinityderp

> The use of nets on the Tennessee River’s Alabama territory was banned in 1975, but the ban has been enforced more in the past few years. Recreational anglers say they’ve seen a resurgence of bass in the river in that time.

Will we see an Alabama Net Trail?? Make your voices heard AL bassers!

Jason Christie’s rod pizza.

Check out Jason Christie’s custom-designed rod box on top of his vee-hickle. Believe he said it holds 25 rods with reels…about 20 more than the most I’ve ever taken with me:

News

1. KVD concerned about Gville’s grass.

Finished 45th there btw.

2. Aussie kid does good on Gville.

Came in 6th:

3. FLW still examining boat…

…that threw 2 men into the water at the Smith Lake FLW. This line floored me:

> Cox clarified that the PFD he was wearing at the time of the accident was a manually-operated model and that’s why it didn’t inflate upon his hitting the water.

So someone makes an infla PFD that is only manually operated?? What good is that?

Update: Mustang makes the PFD. Still can’t see how a manual-operated-only vest makes sense for bassin’…or any kind of boatin’. If I’m missing something obvious, please enlighten me.

4. Rayovac resigns with FLW.

5. MI now has catch/release season.

6. OH dudes jack a huge limit…

…for OH, which means a 22.67-lb bag with a “6.99 beast kicker” — which actually is very stout for OH:

BB reader Johnny Flash, who sent this in, says, “Not bad for a public lake, water temps 48-51.”

Basses caught in Mogadore, which I think is where the Lord of the Rings takes place:

7. CA: Barrett level lowest yet.

But:

> Barrett is available to those with reservations only through Ticketmaster.

Srsly?

8. CA: 36-lb limit on the Delta.

Ken Mah again. Dude crushes it. Deets coming in the next Blaster.

9. ME: Smallie gides fear too many baitfish.

Line of the Day

The fishing remains consistent throughout the remainder of the day with soft plastic baits working well at different depths.

Tip of the Day

Hack Attack makin’ it sound easy:

> In the spring I usually start my topwater fishing somewhere around the 55 degree mark. That’s not the same on every lake and river. In some places it’ll start as low as 50 degrees and in others you’d be better off to wait for two or three more degrees.

> My first baits of the year – before the eggs hatch – are buzzbaits and frogs. I like bigger topwater baits. The reason is simple: Bigger baits have a higher hooking percentage and they seem to attract bigger fish, especially during the prespawn when your bite is coming from the females.

> As the water warms and the eggs hatch I switch to a popper. For some reason the females slow down but the males get really active. I don’t always fish this time of the year on top because the males tend to be smaller fish. As a tournament angler that’s not what I’m looking to catch. But that thinking shouldn’t apply to everyone.

> You can have a really fun day catching smaller males on top. There’s nothing wrong with a 2-pound bass. It’s not about the weight unless you’re fishing for money. Go have some fun. Watch them tail-walk.

Quote of the Day

I felt like a moron, actually.

Paulito Elias talkin‘ to don barone ’bout realizin’ he had 6 in the well at the Gville Elite. Also said:

> It probably took me 2 hours to calm myself to the point where I could really concentrate on fishing again.

Paul, worse things could happen, man…like only havin’ 4 in the well….or 3….

Shot of the Day

Gotta give this one up to the Vikes’ Brian Robison, the original sack dancer, with his topwater PB, a 9.5. Dude has been working out so much, the fish actually flew outta the water and rebounded off that boathouse you see behind him.

Okay, I made that up…but only the last part:

Great rods/reels mang!

Awesome line!

Killah baits yo!

Rad info dude!

Gotta have it!
