Today’s Top 3

1. Another layer below the thermocline?

Ozarks guide Darrel Binkley on the thermocline(s):

> Often he can see the layer on his fish finder. He and his guide clients have been catching stripers below that thermocline, as deep as 70 feet.

> Binkley suspects there’s another limited band of oxygen-rich water down there, one that attracts the stripers, which are less tolerant of warmer water temperatures.

> “I’ve caught stripers as deep as 90 feet on Norfork,” he said matter-of-factly. “Every summer, we’ll catch big fish at depths that some fishermen wouldn’t dream of fishing.”

Wonder if huge largies are down there, like they are in Cali….

2. Something to the HydroWave?

KVD believes it works. Lots of pros have one. Detroit River Open winner Jason Christie, from BassFan:

> “On the second day, I got it to where I had it on and played with it and it got the fish fired up. I had like a 2-hour dry spell without a bite until I finally realized I had accidentally stepped on the pause button. Once I put it back on play, I went from 17 pounds to 21 pounds in like 5 minutes.” [!!]

> “On the third day, I’d ease into the center of [his spot], turn it on high and it would get them fired up. I think it has an effect on fish that are schooled up. It’s like they hear it and they see their buddies get going and they don’t want to be left out.”

3. Group wants ban on selling NY smallies.

NY, in its infinite wisdom (wonder if the Wally St. yucks are running this one too), has proposed allowing the commercial sale of black bass – supposedly to decrease poaching. Now a group wants to make sure smallies aren’t included.

> “…the way the regulation is written does not differentiate between the two [species].”

> “Some sport fishermen are concerned about NY DEC’s definition [of black bass] and its reluctance to require tagging the fish, pitting agricultural interests against [fishing] activists.”

Hey NY DNR/DEC – remember that anglers pay your salaries, not the ag people.

Color C-Lection?

Assuming this graphic is right (from here), looks like a good deep crank color would be…black, red, green?

Quote of the Day

It’s important, but the least fun part of my job.

Alton Jones talking about organizing his tackle “room.” He also said: In the barn, there are many, many boxes of tackle.

Shot of the Day

A 10-02 from Fork. Looks bigger than that!
