Today’s Top 3

First a correction from yesterday: THREE major tourneys this year were won on Yum baits: Alton Jones at the St. Johns, Glen Freeman at the T-Bend EverStart and of course Jason Christie at the Detroit River Open last weekend. A lot of geography there!

1. Would you lip this fish?

Uh….

2. Ewwwwww….

3. Does this golden bass look…tasty?

From Okuma’s Facebook page: Here is a true one in a billion fish landed by Barry Launder. This is the largest “golden” largemouth we have ever seen. The golden color of this largemouth is a rare color variance. Like an albino, the bass in unable to make green color pigments.

Tip of the Day

KVD on spooning for deep summer bass.

> I use a 5-inch, flutter-style Strike King Sexy Spoon. You can use smaller, jigging-style spoons, but the shad are bigger in late summer, and that’s what the big bass target.

Flutter spoons emit a lot of flash and move erratically through the water column,

> Don’t tie direct to the spoon. Add a barrel swivel to the split ring at the front of the bait. That reduces line twist.

> I rarely fish line bigger than 14-pound fluorocarbon. The smaller line gives the bait a faster fall rate and helps trigger bites.

> Most of the time I sit off the structure and make a long cast onto the top edge. I cast up current or across the current so the bait is flowing naturally.

> When it hits bottom, I rip it up the approximate distance at which I saw the fish suspended on the graph. If they’re five feet or more off the bottom, a longer rod makes the job easier.

> The first time I don’t rip it as hard, but will experiment until I see how they want it. If the fish are active at all, a slower stroke will catch them and it also makes it easier for them to get the bait in their mouths.

> Don’t give up on a school you know is there. The hardest fish to catch on a spoon is the first one, but once the school gets going, its game on!

Quote of the Day

Bass are not the salt lovers we are. Bass find it mildly appealing at best.

– Dr. Keith Jones of Berkley in a recent article in the KS Wildlife and Parks mag.

Shot of the Day

Check out this awesome rail on wounded vet Larry Draughn’s boat.

More coolness: The seats are made from the same material used in the AH-64 Apache Attack helicopter.

More cool shots of the rig here, boat by the fine folks at ultimatefishingexperience.com.

HUGE thanks to Larry and all service men/women.
