Today’s Top 3

1. Smallies eat bluegills too…

…or at least they try to. Shots taken from TX’s Greenbelt.

2. Should we all be fishing bigger craws?

Big baits catch big fish, bass love crawfish, so why isn’t there a crawfish bait over 5 inches? (I can’t find one, anyway.)

Is this a case of “everyone’s done it this way for so long,” or is there a good reason? What reason could there be. I mean, it’s not because there aren’t any big craws in lakes. And it wouldn’t matter anyway: When’s the last time you saw a big lizard swimming over pads or along the bottom?

3. Gas prices supposed to go up again.

Not surprised, but sickened. The culprit again is…ethanol. Ethanol is bad for fishing, bad for pheasant hunting and actually makes gas prices go up – so what’s good about it?

> Economists are already predicting price increases for staples like milk and beef as scorching heat and drought wreak havoc on America’s corn crop. Now, add gasoline to that list.

> “We’re pretty well hooked on ethanol,” said Bruce Babcock, professor of economics at Iowa State University. “It’s 10 percent of our gasoline supply.” Babcock estimated the impact of ethanol, which is derived from corn, among other grains, could be as high as 15 cents a gallon.

> “We are definitely at all-time highs and right now, with the drought, there’s no end in sight. Expect higher prices at the pump.”

….!

Some tips on dealing with ethanol.

Tip of the Day

KVD: large spools are better

> I’m a firm believer in the larger spool because it makes spinning tackle so much easier to use.

> Line management is one of areas. You get far fewer “woofers” – that’s what I call line blow-ups caused from twist or tangles – that occur occasionally with smaller spinning reels.

> You can also step up your line size without noticeable problems, and casting distance is vastly improved.

> Also, if you have problems fishing fluorocarbon on spinning reels because the line isn’t supple enough, you’ll find those reduced when fishing it on 40 size reels.

Quote of the Day

I called the Coast Guard, who called the sheriff’s office who sent in a rescue boat, but there couldn’t get within a quarter mile of us.

Alton Jones, telling the story of getting stuck at Green Bay. Sounds like that was some sandbar!

Shot of the Day

Z texted this shot the other day with this message for all BassBlasters, just in time for the weekend:

In Michigan that bass is as old as me! Happy summer from Ztrain!!!!
