Today’s Top 3

1. Brent Ehrler in ‘serious’ car accident, apparently okay.

> FLW confirmed late Monday night that Redlands, Calif., pro Brent Ehrler was involved in a serious automobile accident Monday afternoon outside of Atlanta, Ga. Ehrler was in the area practicing for the upcoming Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Lanier.

> While details are still emerging, Ehrler did not sustain any significant injuries. While his hand and abdomen are sore, X-rays and a CT scan proved negative and Ehrler was discharged from the hospital Monday evening.

If you’re not familiar, Brent is one of the best sticks on the FLW Tour. Glad he’s okay.

Tempted to say something about this being another good reason not to have a big tourney on Lanier, but I won’t. Wait a sec…I think I just did!

But gotta give western bass writer George Kramer props for the best line so far, on Brent’s Facebook page: “Heard the other guy was driving like a Gunfish through traffic.”

2. IN tourney pioneer dies.

RIP to a bassin’ brother:

> One of fishing’s early tournament pioneers, Loyd McEntire of Indiana, passed away this week after a lengthy illness. McEntire fished three Bassmaster Classics and was known for his quick wit and “never met a stranger” demeanor. He was a flexible angler and a power fisherman whom everyone loved. McEntire also had one of the first franchise stores for Bass Pro Shops in the early 70’s.

3. Asian carp DNA found in the Great Lakes.

On the one hand you might think this is no big deal – the Great Lakes have survived zebra mussels, gobies and whatever else has found its way in there. And maybe you’re right.

But on the other hand, those carp exist at incredible densities and filter-feed the smallest stuff out of the water, which could in theory kill the food chain. You could say that the zebras do that too, but zebras don’t swim around and do it.

Who knows. Maybe we’ll all be fishing for carp in the future, except on the Potomac River where we’ll be fishing for snakeheads.

Headline of the Day

Weed beds a scourge to those who fish for bass

> About the only creatures that don’t care for weeds are bass fishermen, most of them anyway, because bass lurking far back in beds of foliage are hard to reach and even harder to haul out of such cover.

Dang straight! We also hate brush, rockpiles, ledges — do I need to go on?

Tip of the Day

Roland Martin on long-line froggin’.

From BassFan.com, patterns 2-5 from the Lake Champlain FLW:

> “The big deal on that frog bite was putting 150 to 180 feet of heavy braid on my reel,” he said. “Sometimes on a downwind cast, I’d throw all of that line out. I hooked one of the big 5-pounders I caught 150 feet away. Those fish were real spooky and it took a long cast.”

So what? Well, not only is it interesting, it shows that the father/grandfather/etc. of bass patterning is still doing it. He’s not out there listening to dock talk and just fishin’, he’s figuring those bad boys out. Check out the white frog (Spro Bronzeye):

Quote of the Day

Give these aerobatic wrestlers a try and you’ll soon find out how much fun they can be!

Ted Takasaki writing about smallies. Had to include it because of ‘aerobatic wrestlers.’ Never heard that one before.

Shot of the Day

Man unsure if bass is radioactive.

Okay, not really, just an odd shot of a glowing-looking bass (a nice ne) from a CA Delta tourney last year.

A little insensitive now that we know the woman in the crash was killed, had hydroplaned into Ehrler’s vehicle. Thoughts and prayers with both families.

Holy cow! Did not know, thanks for the heads up. Googled it, came up with nothing, but…should’ve listened to my little voice. Tragic, prayers to both families. Sorry to all for the unintended insensitivity.
