Today’s Top 2

1. Finally THE pic of George Perry’s WR bass??

Lots of folks have doubted George Perry’s claim of a 22-04 world record largie for the same reason they doubt bigfoot: no proof…in George’s case meaning no photo. No one had iPhones in 1932 (not even Al Gore, who invented iPhones), and Perry was fishing for food so he ate the bass.

Got that? THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ONE CONFIRMED PHOTO OF THAT BASS…maybe until now. Check it:

According to this recent article about that bass, Perry referred to two photos: “one that was ‘not a real good photo’ and another he described as ‘a real good picture of myself and the big bass together’….”

The first photo exists, though no one’s sure if it’s that bass. The second photo, never seen before, might be the one above – recently found in a Florida barn and e-mailed to GA author Bill Baab, author of the book Remembering George W. Perry.

> The person who e-mailed Baab the photo identified himself as a descendent of a man who was Perry’s companion the day the famous fish was landed.

> The e-mail, Baab said, disclosed that the image was found in a barn the family owned in Florida. But the sender declined to answer further questions.

That look like a 22-lber to you? Certainly could be….

2. Christie wins 3rd tour-level event…this year!

Dude! Someone pull the alarm because Jason Christie is on fiya!

Beaver Lake FLW in April, Bull Shoals Elite also in April, and this weekend the Grand Lake FLW. Think he knows upland reservoirs??? Now you know why he was a fave at the Classic.

Anyhow, three wins at that level in one year is friggin’ fantastic. Borderline scary. Yep, it’s been done before – most recently KVD in 2005, also Denny, Roland and a kid named Billy Dance, according to Bassin’Fan – but not a lot.

Wow.

Btw to win at Grand Jason frogged a little with a Booyah Pad Crasher, but mostly flipped a Yum Wooly Bug and an unnamed creature bait.

Tip of the Day

Keith Combs: Big worms deep.

> “I can fish a deep brushpile with a crankbait or a football jig and catch a ton of fish, but the true giants will show themselves when you break out the big worm. People don’t throw them much anymore, but the bass still devour them.”

> A big worm is also very resistant to hangups, making it an even better choice for fishing deep cover and structure. “There’s nothing worse than getting hung up on one of your best deep summer spots,” Combs said. “If you throw a football jig or a Carolina rig into a deep brushpile, you’re going to catch a bunch of limbs. The slender profile of a big worm comes through cover very well and helps you fish more efficiently.”

> Combs wants to cover as much water as possible and quickly fishing a big worm allows him to do just that. “Summertime is all about moving and casting as many times as you can. When I’m searching for key areas with rock, brush or shell beds, I fish a big worm very quickly with a lot of aggressive hops. If I run across some cover that feels really nice, that’s when I’ll slow down and fish it like a traditional worm.”

> “A big worm is great for active bass because it gives you such an awesome hookup ratio—probably around 98%…. If you’re stuck with inactive fish, you’ve got several things going for you. On part of your cast you can soak it in high-percentage areas and you can also hop it quickly to irritate a big one into biting.”

Quote of the Day

I kicked a lot of toads to find these lakes.

Guy talking about finding small lakes with big bass. Not real sure what he meant – kissed a lot of frogs? licked a lot of toads? – but whatever it was it probly has some health risk along with being a, uh, questionable way to get on fishies.
