Today's Top 5

1. Douglas: strollin' again?

Remember that derby on Douglas, TN was when the whole "strolling/longlining" thing came up on the Elites. Well, an Open's there this weekend and:

Posted by Chris Zaldain, who said that fish – which burped up that shad – was at 30 feet.

2. Future of fishin' selfies?

Back in the day, someone who looked like this would get arrested (probly) or be shunned and throwed in the water for bein' a #hyperdork. But now…normal?

Dude looks like a Tusken Raider:

3. Howell goes plaid.

First Browning, now Howell. Elites are gettin' to be fashionistas. Bring back bassin' grunge!

4. A lot of fishermen here use only live bait.

French dude here to fish Douglas, talkin' about France. Pretty sure they EAT a lot of bait in France too, not sure how those two facts go together but you won't find no basser eatin' snails or minners.

5. Disturbing Josh Bertrand photo.

Even more disturbing: was posted by Bertrand.

2. Weekend bass boat accidents.

MO: Ozarks

> A bass boat sustained extensive damage Saturday morning, when it crashed into two docks, according to the highway patrol. The 1994 Champion bass boat was being driven from a cove during a rain storm when the operator reached for a fishing rod and the steering wheel slipped from his hands, the highway patrol reported. As a result, the boat reportedly made a sharp right turn and slammed into two docks. Both the docks and the boat sustained damage. The incident occurred at the 55 Mile Marker, in Proctor Creek Cove.

TX: Angelina River

> Arlon Chance, 52 and Charlotte Bowden 38, both of Tyler County, were killed after two boats collided on the Angelina River. [RIP bassin' brother and sister.]

> The accident happened on the Angelina River behind the dam south of the Highway 63 bridge.

> Jenkins says the bass boat they were in collided in a sharp, blind curve with a bay boat. There were five occupants in the bay boat including three children. The driver of the bay boat was seriously injured….

TX: Lewisville

> A call came in Friday at about 9:15 p.m. about a man and a woman having difficulty in a bass boat on the Lake Dallas side….

> By the time Lewisville Fire Department rescue crews arrived, the boat had begun to sink and the woman was found clinging to the top. Crews were able to get the woman to safety, but the man was already missing.

> Using sonar, officials said they found the man’s body at 11:28 a.m. Sunday about 200 yards offshore in 20 feet of water. [RIP bassin' brother.]

TX: Rayburn

> Not a bass boat, but game warden ejected from boat, hit by prop.

3. AL: Horton scholarship derby.

Cool.

4. MO: Insurance idjits screw up…

…Nixa High School's bassin' team. Wanted stupid requirements for volunteer boaters. Wonder if the insurance co is in…New Yawk City?

…but still way low – and NOT funky or cold….

6. Shuffield update?

Apparently had a heart attack a couple weeks ago, don't know how I missed it. Anyone have an update on his health?

Tip of the Day

Brandon Palaniuk: Rising water vs water T.

> Palaniuk said that [springtime] fish in a rising water situation often move all the way back into the newly flooded brush and shoreline grasses. His belief is that the bass get a sense of increased oxygen levels in the new influx of water and they follow that and the baitfish that are doing the same thing.

> “I believe that this is more important than the water temperature. I often see fish in low to mid-40s-degree water all the way back in the creeks in the flooded brush, then find them further out in the creek for the actual spawn after the water levels have stabilized.”

> On stable or falling water, Palaniuk said he starts looking between spawning and wintering areas to transition areas that fish tend to settle into before the spawn. “These areas are structural features such as points, humps and channel bends leading into the creek mouths,” he said.

> In the rising water situation, he looks to use baits that will be efficient in shallow water. “I like a big double Colorado-bladed Terminator T2 spinnerbait in chartreuse and white. That’s for when the fish are in a chasing mode. But if they are really tight to cover, then I Flip and pitch a Terminator Pro Series jig with the old-school pork trailer on it."

Quote of the Day

I fished right by a lot of fish.

Paulito Elias talkin' 'bout what happens after this:

> I had a really bad practice – nothing I tried seemed to work. When that happens and you don't watch yourself, you tend to fish faster and faster and you don't cover anything thoroughly enough.

Just gitcha a 2-lb thrust trollin' motor! Yee-ha that's fast!
