Today's Top 5

1. Do spots swallow footballs?

Talkin' spotted bass this time o' year.

First up we have the potential WORLD RECORD caught in Feb outta New Melones, CA (which means Nuevo Melons in Spanish) on a deadsticked wacky-rigged Senko:

Sucka weighed 10.48 – 24 1/2" long 22 1/8" girf (yep, girf). Crazy!

Next is the possible TN record (6-15) caught this week wif a jerkbait outta Parksville Lake:

Are these frickin' things swallowin' Wilsons or what? Lookit those bellies!

2. Property values generally are higher on lakes with zebra mussels.

Scientist. Seriously:

> "Some research has shown that they disadvantaged some unpopular fish species. They blanket the bottom of the lake bed so carp can’t feed… They also seem to be advantageous to fish species that people like, like smallmouth bass."

> "With statistical certainty, I can say that zebra mussels are associated with an approximately 10% increase in lakefront property prices."

Ya hear that lakefront owners?? Get out there and start dumpin' mussels hahahaha! I never said that….

3. Salvinia suicide?

Could this pesky weed be a goner?

> Test trays of Salvinia kept dying. Researchers isolated the compound in Salvinia believed to be causing the suicidal demise. Then they easily placed it on healthy plants. "You see after a few weeks, all the plants die."

4. Worst bass selfie shot?

Cliff Pirch is a great dude, but wth…this may be the worst bass selfie shot ever:

Dang, bro!

5. 33 + minnows = 10-lber.

Would you believe this guy wuz fishin' with a Zebco 33 and minnows to catch this 10.3-lber? Of course you would:

Nice feesh!

Tip of the Day

Justin Lucas: Swimbaitin' tips.

FLWer and Elite rookie:

> "I throw it everywhere. It does not matter. You can throw them on main-lake points, in the backs of pockets, maybe across a point in a pocket."

> "Maybe there's some grass out in the middle of a pocket like at Guntersville. You'll have clumps of isolated grass where you can go through and tick the top of that grass in the springtime."

> Lucas prefers to fish them on jigheads. For baits in the 5-6" range, Lucas prefers a jighead built with a 5/0 hook. For smaller baits, a 3/0 hook should suffice.

> "I'll throw a 1/4-ounce for anything 5 feet or less or under floating docks over 20 feet," he said. "The 1/4-ounce is great for skipping under docks or when the fish are relating to shade. Plus, it's something that gets down below the floats and they can look up and see it."

> He covers 8 to 15 feet with a 1/2-ounce and ties on a 3/4-ounce when the fish are 15 feet or deeper.

> "Everybody's like, 'You need a nasty, cloudy, rainy day,'" he said. "My best days have come on sunny, clear days because a swimbait isn't a bait that makes a lot of vibration or noise like a crankbait.

Quote of the Day

Many bass fishermen will tell you, they have spent many hours in front of the television….

– Hahahaha! Sounds nuts, like we should be out on the water, but totally true. From a cool article about Maj. Mike Rasco (pictured), XO for the 3rd Battalion, 401st Army Field Support Brigade.

Tx much to Mike and all of you who are serving or have served in our armed forces. You're awesome.
