River Smallie Bounties in Missoura

From the ruler, that looks like a big smallie (MO DR photo).

Seems like everyone’s tagging a million-dollar fish these days, to get fishermen to do what they’d do anyway…. In our world it’s all about largies, far as I’m aware. So was interested to read that the Missouri DNR has tagged smallies in several rivers, and catching one can win you some bucks.

Any other DNRs doing this with river smallmouths?

MO deets from this article:

> The Missouri Department of Conservation is tagging legal sized smallmouth bass in the Black River, Castor River, Courtois Creek, Current River and the North Fork of the White River.

> Anglers who catch the tagged fish will receive a $25 or $75 reward after reporting their catch to MDC researchers. Fish do not have to be kept to receive the reward.  Anglers may remove the tag and release the fish.

> Fisheries Management Biologist Paul Cieslewicz says the goal of this program is to help determine harvest regulations on the rivers in the future and maintain the high quality of smallmouth bass.

Cieslewicz said that “the ultimate goal is to determine what percentage of smallmouth bass are being harvested by anglers,” but it’s unclear from the article how they’ll do that with data on just the tagged fish.

Whatever. Missouri smallie streams are magic, and if you can get your trip expenses paid for, cool.

That measuring tape is in centimeters not inches, so it’s only a 7-8 inch smallmouth. The fine lines are 10 between 17 and 18, not 16 like it would be if the main lines were in inches. And those hands would be HUGE !

I wish every state DNR did this. It would get alot more people interested in fishing i would think.

Missouri has one of the best Conservation Departments in the the country. They do nearly everything in a first-rate manner.
