Rip Bass: Anyone Know This Guy?

A guy supposedly named “Rip Bass” won the American Bass Anglers American Fishing Tour event on the Pamlico-Tar Rivers, NC in February 2010…which we recently tripped over in the process of checking FishingGold data fyi.

Anyone know the guy?

Asking because that name sounds…suspicious. Reminds me of the Simpsons episode when Homer changes his name to Max Power and it transforms his life.

So I have to wonder:

1. If Rip Bass is a real name (Rip I guess being a nickname).

2. If it is a real name, was the guy’s father a diehard basser.

3. If it’s not a real name, was it used for purposes of disguise – or, like Homer, to see what would happen if he had a cool fishin’ name.

Here’s the link on the ABA website. Note the lack of a photo. Like I said, suspicious….

Yeah, he is a real guy. Fishes local NC tournaments. I don’t know him personally but I have seen him around.

So if he’s real, than we’re at: Is that his real name?

He’s from Spring Hope, NC……He has fished a few bfl’s and maybe a couple of BASS tournaments. He is a good fisherman. I only know him by RIP and his last name is Bass.

I know a dude named Rem. His name comes from an acronym using the first letter of the first, middle, and last names: Richard E. McNealy. Maybe that’s how he got Rip. Plenty of people with the last name Bass. Now if your name is Rip Bass and you can rip bass….now that’s somethin’ !!!

On the subject of names, of course there’s one of our Indiana FLW Tour pros named “Shad”, which is kind of cool. But my all time favorite, and a super nice guy from what I’ve seen a time or two conversing with him on another fishing forum…

I ran across this a few years ago. Notice that the 7th and 8th place finishers are “Larry Mixon” and “Bill Nance.” Now that’s a coincidence.

Not sure why the first guy thinks its suspicious that he doesnt have a posted photo on ABA?? If you go to years past Greenville Marine tournaments they have plenty of photos of him…usually holding up a trophy. His real name is Richard Bass. Rip is just a nick name he had since he was a kid. I’v know him and fished with him all of my life. Like the previous posts said…he’s a very good fisherman. Theres not many fishing techniques that he hasnt mastered and he’s hell with a jig in his hand. Also, he has always put the time in on the water to be successful. You better believe when the money is on the line…he’ll be as prepared as possible to win or at least get a check.

This last comment was true. Rip’s name is Richard Dale Bass. Cousin privilege! I choose to believe he picked up many fishing tips from my dad (his uncle) R. L. Bass. I’ll just leave it a mystery as to what R. L. stands for.
