Phones okay in derbies!, winning ‘Trap colors, Bassquatches!

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Bass biz folks – Do ya REALLY want to let this season go by without bein' in the Blaster?? Just reply if'n innerested.

Today's Top 4

1. Using phones DURING derbies ok.

> If you have not been made aware yet, FLW implemented a new, never-seen before rule that now allows the use of cell phones “for pros to post social media updates.” Up until this point in time, pros have only been able to use cell phones to communicate with lockmasters on certain river systems where locking is allowed or in emergency situations, such as an equipment failure.

Not sure if that's the case with B.A.S.S., but think it is judging by the Facebook posts during tournaments…not to mention the fact that if you're posting, you're not casting.

All this reminds me of a GREAT tune by the apt-named Temptations:

Delbert McClinton does a decent version of that here, but just doesn't have the same funk.

2. 6 Traps to win Rayburn.

Mentioned yesterday Rat-L-Traps won the Rayburn Rayovac. Beeg weener Chris McCall of Brookeland, TX (that's sposed to be BrookLYN yo) "had six different Rat-L-Traps tied on in a variety of colors including red, white craw and gold."

Was actually white crawfish and sexy zombie, word is he won't give up the red color.

The other two baits are a 6th Sense squarebill and a Santone football jig with a Gambler craw.

> 2nd place: "He had five different Traps tied on to his rods – all some different variation of red."

> 3rd: "…a gold Strike King Red Eye Shad and a Rat-L-Trap in Rayburn Red. He matched those with 16-pound Sunline fluorocarbon on a 6.4:1 Lew’s reel and a 7-foot, 2-inch American Rodsmiths jig rod."

Not sure which gold Red Eye Shad that was, but here's gold sexy:

3. Heeeeere's Cranapple!

Classic fishermen take note: Here's the Rat-L-Trap color cranapple, one of the two winning colors on Guntersville this weekend. I think that's more a red than a copper, like it looks….

How were the 'Traps fished in Gville's 30s water temps? Find out here on the BassGold Blog.

4. 13.67 newest TX ShareLunker.

A-rig fish:

> Frank W. Kirk of Athens caught Toyota ShareLunker 553 from Lake Athens about 1:30 p.m. Saturday. He was fishing in 15 feet near the dam using an Alabama rig. The fish weighed 13.67 pounds and was 26.75 inches long and 21 inches in girth.

Tip of the Day

Cold-water docks.

> "I primarily target main lake docks and docks surrounding the mouths of larger pockets," guide Jimmy Mason said.

> He locates a stretch of docks with suitable water depth – 20 to 25 feet on the ends. "Ideally, I want to find docks that are built on a fairly steep bank. If you can find a steep dropoff about halfway down the dock, you’re in business."

> "Wooden boat docks can certainly produce big winter bass, but the presence of metal will drastically increase your chances…. Metal holds heat much better than wood, which attracts both bass and forage."

> "All rock is good rock in the winter…darker rock is ideal. It holds head much better than light-colored gravel. I like to focus on areas with basketball or softball-sized rocks because they have more surface area and warmth while also giving crawfish opportunities to hide.”
