Pace can’t fish, Gville’s cold ‘Trap bite, BB wins again

Welcome to Jay Kumar’s BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o’ bassin’!

Bass biz folks – Do ya REALLY want to let this season go by without bein’ in the Blaster?? Reply to this email if interested in gettin’ aboard.

Today’s Top 3

1. Pace can’t fish Classic.

Broke his leg falling out of a treestand, lucky it wasn’t worse. Had surgery, B.A.S.S. said he gets an auto-qualify to the ’15 Classic.

Only other guys who didn’t defend their Classic wins were Bryan Kerchal and Luke Clausen, who didn’t fish the Elites after winning.

Nothing funny feels right here. Feel bad for him.

2. Cold-water ‘Trap bite ON on Gville.

Water temps in the upper 30s (!!) for the Ra-L-Trap-only derby at Guntersville this weekend. Won by Tony Redwine/Bobby Ovell with 25.06, 3 other sacks over 20.

Winning colors were Blue Sapphire and an old one called Cran-Apple (I think that’s the 2nd color below):

More deets on how these baits were fished coming tomorrow.

‘Traps also won the Rayburn Rayovac (EverStart) this weekend. Those deets tomorrow too.

3. BB Cricket wins again.

Seems like if you’re fishin’ Florida and don’t have some of these in your boat, you ain’t winnin’. Dude named Van <del>Halen</del> Soles won the Toho Open fishing Kissimmee:

> …focusing on matted vegetation up against buggy whips, cattails and Kissimmee grass. “The bass were really lethargic and the bite was slower…hopping it up and down 10 or 12 times in a spot before the fish would hit.”

> Soles pitched and punched the matted vegetation with a Gambler BB Cricket (emerald blue, black/blue flake and Bowen silver shadow) on a 3/0 Cobra Flipping Hook behind a 1 1/2-oz Elite tungsten sinker pegged to the line by a Jethro Baits bobber stop.

> His line was 65-pound Power Pro braid on a Lew’s Speed Spool casting reel (7.1:1), on a borrowed rod [awesome!].

Here are the 3 colors in order, top/bottom. Not sure about the second one, might have been shadow blue glitter (pictured):

Tip of the Day

Mark Menendez: Hookset mechanics.

Good reminder/primer, particularly if you ever doubt your mechanics after watching pro fishermen do it differently. Vid below, but Cliff’s Notes version is:

> Flippin’: Keep your hands forward, fast hookset straight up and keep the fish moving.

> Treble-hook baits: Glass rod, sweep to the side.

Quote of the Day

The reality is that I was still just a tiny blip on the radar.

– Josh “fear the scruff” Bertrand talkin’ ’bout how he expected sponsors to come knockin’ when he made the Elites but:

> “Just making it isn’t enough – you have to prove yourself at that level.”
