Today’s Top 3

1. I used to follow the bread crumbs.

Big bass safari hunter Mike Long, from his inaugural column on Bassmaster.com. Rest of the quote:

> Photos in magazines and newspapers, lake reports, stories from other fishermen – all that stuff would send me off in a million different directions, chasing fish that often didn’t even exist.

> Ultimately, I decided I was better off doing it on my own, trusting my own instincts…. A lot of what you hear and see from other sources is bad information that will only take you off the right path.

When Mike talks, I listen. Very stoked about the new column. Here’s Mike with one of his beeggest feeshes:

Hahahahaha! Btw that part about “bad information” is why BassGold works. It’s not “information,” it’s data and data don’t lie, folks!

2. Quinn vs. Quinn

Here’s Rapala’s Dan Quinn (top photo), son of In-Fisherman’s Stevie Quinn (bottom photo). Dan was fishing MN’s Mille Lacs this weekend. His dad…wasn’t. Too bad, Steve!

3. What’s the LiveTarget Bait Ball?

Check this sneak peekaboo for the upcoming ICAST fishing tackle trade show:

Also says this:

> We promise that you’ll be impressed with this totally new concept in lure design and technology.

Should I go? Tempted and think it’s a cool reveal…but am afraid it’s an A-rig something or other….

Didja check out the awesome StrikeBack spinnerbait yet?

Tip of the Day

Randy Haynes: Offshore tips.

Few tips from a longer Q&A with offshore structure master and recent Pickwick EverStart winner:

Randy, how are you weighting the Strike King 6XD to get to that 22- to 23-foot range?

We’re putting on a little bit heavier hooks, using 10-pound line and tuning the bait where it will run perfectly straight. But not every bait will run that deep, at least not out of the box.

Do you prefer deep-diving cranks to run straight down or do you like to tune them to run one way or the other?

Run straight. One hundred percent – run straight. When those baits hit a rock, they kick up and generate extra strikes. When that bait jumps off a rock, if it’s running straight, it’ll jump up and give off a bigger hop and the fish can’t ignore it.

Randy, what kind of swimbaits are you throwing on ledges and when?

I use various swimbaits with a 1/2-ounce head and it’s getting to where swimbaits are becoming an all-year deal. There is always a swimbait rod on my deck.

Quote of the Day

Clear? Clear! Clear! Clear! Clear!

– The 5 guys who took 15 MINUTES to load up two tin boats last night because they checked every conceivable frickin’ thing under the sun (and apparently needed four confirms for each thing) – while their boats sat on the ramp! No joke…but we felt like we were being punked….

Then we waited on a jet skiier who had to block the way out of the lot to dry his feet and put on boots. No shirt for drivin’, but he had to be wearin’ some boots!
