No duck for BASS?, big’un shots!, new Rayburn red

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

HNY bass-heads! No "rezolutions" stuff here cuz everyone is askin' that stuff – which automatically makes it stale imo. But I hope you fish more, catch more and laugh more this year. And all bass-nuts who agree say….

Today's Top 5

1. What, no duck?

Nationwide, Geico and Allstate are playin' in the B.A.S.S. pond. Pretty cool trick.

Why no Aflac duck?? Think we found the answer:

2. Bassquatches bitin' again!

It's pre-spawn folks!

^ Dec. 26, somewhere in CA. Says 9-12 but looks bigger, doncha think?

^ Dec. 28, 13.3 from Lake Fork, TX, deets from Lew's:

> He was fishing in 30 feet of water with a Buckeye Mop Jig tipped with a Paca Craw and his trusty Lew's reel.

^ Dec. 30, 13.76 from Lake Athens, TX.

3. New hot 'Trap color on Rayburn?

From the Rat-L-Trap FB page:

> Ann's Tackle has already re-ordered these new Pinch'n Peach Rat-L-Traps twice in the past month. Ann says its the new hot color on Rayburn. It's got a lot of the same color tones as the classic brown eye, but with new craw pattern.

4. Zona's Awesome sneak peak.

Z is awesome every dang year – me and my kids can't wait.

5. Mercer is…awesome too.

Trailer for crazy Dave's show, 014 season. Might be the best trailer for a bassin' show I've seen. Seriously.

Beginning to think Dave is one of the smartest guys in bass fishing.

Btw trailer has one of the coolest frog-fishing sequences ever:

News

1. Pray for db.

don barone:

> I'm sorry to say I will be off fb and my cell phone for awhile. I'm pretty sick and they are going to run a battery of cardiac tests so I will be out of it for a couple of days. Thank you for your concern and prayers.

Don is and has been goin' through some tough stuff. Please say a few words for him.

2. John Murray officially fishing FLWs too.

Also posted that he re-read this article about Clunn's Classic win at Gville. Cool but that was in, uh, August….

3. Debra Hengst coming back…

…after battling the Big C:

> Diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2011, I continued to compete in 2011 and 2012 even after two surgeries and treatments, but it took a toll on my body so I laid off this year 2013.

> Received my package from B.A.S.S. for the 2014 Central Opens. I am going to make a run at it again and I could not be more excited….

4. Megabass pro baits.

First part cool, second part not so cool:

> Megabass will work closely with each pro on developing specific products for each to use at specific tournaments – baits and rods built just for them or certain conditions.

> These won't be signature series items, per se, because it's unlikely these products will ever be available to consumers unless it's something that consistently outperforms a product already in the Megabass portfolio.

5. Bassin'master team champeenship.

Another (yet another?) way into the Classic. Sounds a lot like the ol' BassFan Army, which worked great. Could be a smart move by B.A.S.S…IF done right….

6. BassBlaster changes?

What do you want to see on JK's BB next year? Lemme know here on FB.

Readin' Material

1. Get these books!

Why We Fish – You think you know, but this'll learn ya….

Catching Fish – You would not believe how much of what we take for granted was invented by the Lindners. Super cool.

Just Keep Reeling – Who said fishin' had to be serious??

Ya don't have to be lit'rary…all are great bathroom reading too – seriously!

Tip of the Day

Dave Wolak: Find the 10%.

> I've heard many top-shelf bass fishermen say 90% of the bass are in 10% of the water. Well, good bass anglers spend 90+ percent of their time figuring out where those 10% locations are, and less than 10% of their time figuring out how to catch the fish.

> Do yourself a favor and resolve to spend more time next season learning and understanding the fish’s preferred habitats, factors like seasonal migrations, and even how to adapt successfully to transitional weather.

> Stop trying to find the quick fix in the form of a material product or tactic. Trust me, in the long run the effort will pay off.

Would add: BE the 10% – meaning 10% of anglers find 90% of the fish. It AIN'T all about GPS points peeps!

Quote of the Day

I quickly figured a winter pattern (casting a Strike King football jig/Rage Craw) that held up throughout the lake, which told me Guntersville bass are patternable.

Chris Zaldain, giving away more than he knows about how bass can be caught in that wee li'l event called the Bassin'masters Classical derby. Proof: BassGold shows a good jig bite, and data don't lie moofoos!

Is it me or does his right arm look weird?
