Today’s Top 5
1. Is MLF going to the dark side?

MLFers are no longer allowed to cradle fish, like this:

> Now the fish won’t be allowed to touch any part of an angler’s body except for his hands or forearms. [What if it brushes a jersey??]

> “We want to be as careful as possible in the way our anglers handle fish because we believe this is the right thing to do.”

My Qs:

> Is this really necessary – from a conservation POV? Can see making it tougher on the anglers because that’s MLF world, but bass ain’t dainty skirt-wearin’ trout for cryin’ out loud.

> Is MLF getting a little too animal rights about this fish-handling thing? What’s next – barbless hooks??

2. While some do haunt me, most of them don’t.

A-mart on his multiple 2nd-place finishes. Also said:

> In most of my 2nd-place finishes, I didn’t lose the tournament, somebody else went out and won it. When you’re fishing with 100 of the best anglers in the world, it’s not easy to beat all 99 of them. Sometimes one of them just goes out and wins it, and there’s nothing any of the rest of us can do.

Aaron definitely handles 2nd better than these folks:

3. Would you fish a Booty Call?

Northland 2-OUNCE spinnerbait. Gotta love a bait that’s about half as long as the fish!

4. FLW Cup won in < 2′.

Just in case you think it gets too hot for ’em ultra-shallow, here’s FLW Cup winner Randall Tharp talkin’ on Bassin’Fan:

> “It’s a shallow-water fishery and these bass stay shallow all year [on the Red River, LA]. It’s the dead of summer and I caught most of my fish in 2 feet or less.”

5. For ladies who enjoy bass fishing or those who have to suffer through their husband’s bass fishing.

– Hahaha! Cliff Pirch’s wife Alicia on her new Bass Bling line of fishin’ duds for women-folk. It’s also Cliff’s newest sponsor…not sure if he’ll be sportin’ some o’ those cute tees?

Tip of the Day

Mark Davis: Gear won’t make you better.

> I see a lot of guys who try to compensate for a lack of basic fishing skills…and confidence…by spending money.

> They think if they could go faster, have a more expensive rod and reel or grab a handful of the newest baits they could catch them like the other guys. They forget that you have to find the fish first and then make them bite.

> Keep in mind that no lure will catch bass that aren’t there.

> There’s a reason why the old standby [lures] are old standbys.

> Boats are no different. I fish out of a Skeeter FX model bass boat. It’s a fishing machine. At home I fish a lot out of an ordinary jonboat. Not having my Skeeter under me is no excuse for not catching fish.

> If there’s a place where you might want to spend money on the newest and the best, it’s with electronics.

> What I’m not saying here is that you shouldn’t upgrade your equipment. I am saying that you have to develop basic skills and know how to use what you have before you spend a lot of money on upgrades.

> Believe in yourself. Learn to fish. Buy what you need.

Quote of the Day

Only God could do something like that in Chicago.

Jay Yelas, just in case you wondered whether spending $100K of Busch AOY money giving away his autobiography was worth it. Here’s the full quote:

> “I was in Chicago at a seminar a year or so after the book came out, and I saw this huge black gentleman coming toward me. He was probably 6-foot-8 and 350 pounds. He picked me up and gave me this huge bear hug. He spun me around and said he’d read my book, and because of that, he had found Jesus. Only God could do something like that in Chicago.”

Btw, this be pretty dang stout:

> For 24 consecutive years, Yelas has qualified for the Bassmaster Classic, the Forrest Wood Cup, or both.

Miss Jay on the Elites.
