BassBlaster

Melons of the week, Lane on slow rolling, Don’t make bass cows

If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s because a bud signed you up!

Today’s Top 4

Slobberin’ watery melon roll!
How ’bout some 13s: After a 4.5-month drought of TX ShareLunker feesh (have to be at least 13 lbs), Bruce Butler caught this 13.13 from Lake Alan Henry on…April 13. 26″ long and 21″ girth:

Cool factoids:

  • In 2004 Bruce caught a 14.8-lber, also from Alan Henry.
  • Alan Henry is now tied with Rayburn for 2nd in the number of entries into the ShareLunker program. #1 = Fork.

Nope that’s not Cali, that’s Pickwick, AL! Cameron Gautney got this 11.23 water-filled melon with a Profound Outdoors Veach Basin Worm (Senko-ish):

Looks like the Ben Parker Magnum Spoon is catching ’em in Japan too. No weight given for this’n but nice:

BB reader Grae Buck caught a nice meanmouth t’other day on Oneida Lake, NY using an original Phenix Vibrating Jig with a 3.5″ Lake Fork Live Magic Shad…which absolutely NO ONE on the Elites uses as a Chatterbait trailer (lol):

Would you?
Would you fish outta one o’ these…in a gator pond? This dude would:

I gotta try one of those things. Anyone been in one yet?

It’s time to go find a few #meatheads on Bull Shoals!

Fletch Shryock talkin‘ I think about lookin’ for the pre-tourney meeting but not sure….

Not real sure why that quote reminds me of this but maybe you will know:

Let’s not turn the bass into the cow like in India.

– Bahahahahahahaha! Dude talkin‘ ’bout keepin’ some basses. Too funny. Few of the choicest comments from that thread:

  • Old heavy bass taste like a shoe. No thanks.
  • Kind of a pungent fishy meatiness to them, like frozen tilapia.
  • Largemouth bass are gross.

With all the “treat the bass nice” bidness on the social webz, guy has a point. But the cows in India have it too nice. Even have their own beaches — seriously:

Ping-Pong Elite News

Cuz they are ping-pongin’ this week.

1. AR: Fog delay but….

…everyone thought it was just the fog, but one of the spectators took this shot from the Norfork Bridge:

Gojira! Used to be this before all the underground nuke testing there:

2. What Elites do during fog delays.

They work out…sorta:

3. Did A-Mart lose his fingers?

As seen on Bassin’master.com — bowfin?

News

1. Rookie Vermilyea pulls out of Elites.

Great honest blog post about it here. Couple highlights:

> If your business was costing you thousands and bringing zero return, what would you do? Would you try to get a loan and go further in debt? Or would you cut your losses and move on?

> …with another $8000.00 payment needing to be made by April 12th and then another by May 3rd and then still 2 more after that! I had a decision to make. Do I take every dime out of our bank account to make an $8000.00 payment to continue to on with the series, but then have no funds what so ever to travel on? Leave my wife to struggle living paycheck to paycheck supporting our household?

> This year has definitely been a dream come true! But now it is time to put my family and their needs first.

2. Clunn selling spread.

Will be living right next door, sorta, so if’n you buy it you can run over there and ask him all kinds of Qs about feeshn.

Btw flippin’ inventor Dee Thomas won a CA Delta derby on the same weekend Clunn won this year. In China it’s also the year of the Fire Monkey, which is “ambitious and adventurous, but irri.” Not sure if any connection.

3. David Walker Project Z vid.

Not sure what Project Z is but the vid is good.

4. db tribute to Brian Harold.

VA Nation bassin’ brother we lost on Gaston last week. Sounds like he was a great guy. His wife and kids need support.

> To help Kathy, Clay and Bradley make out a check to VIRGINIA B.A.S.S. NATION, write on it “In Memory of Brian Harold” and send it to:

#stout Tim Little!

8. AZ: Wild West team derby at Pleasant Apr 30.

9. MO: HS derby results on Rock.

Winners had 17.24 caught on Keitechs.

10. 3 car had Ranger Boats on it.

Don’t know much about NASCAR but Bass Pro Shops is heavily in it, and a few folks hipped me to Ranger Boats now on the rear quarter:

Believe Tracker Boats used to be back there. This a big deal? No idea.

11. NJ: Snakeheads in Delaware River.

Didn’t know that, but Pete Gluszek caught one:

12. Tackle Warehouse has a new website!

More modern-looking, still highly addictive….

13. Bass U: JT Kenney on breaking down lily pads.

14. Shimano Caenan baitcaster “review.”

Not really a review but some info. More info at Tackle Warehouse.

15. Skeeter turns 20 under Yamaha ownership.

When I checked no mention on Skeeter’s FB page — but this was there, the new Skeeter ZX750:

Sailor hat rules! Which Elite would look best in that? I’m thinking Howell, but picturing A-Mart and Ish wearing it is making me laugh.

16. DC: Battling to make sure fisheries aren’t closed.

Reminder that it’s saltwater right now but the crazies have their eyes on the whole pie.

17. Didya miss the spring baits Blaster?

If you missed the Special-Like Spring Baits BassBlaster sent out this weekend, here’s the archived copy.

18. Take the BassBlaster survey, maybe win some loot.

Take you a few mins, 12 multiple choice questions, you get to have a say in the future of the BassBlaster. Tx much.

Tip of the Day

Excerpted from Bassin’master.com:

> “Those big prespawn females know where they want to go to spawn, but they just won’t go up there yet because every third or fourth day a cold front approaches. So they’ll hold back. Well, every couple of days that go by, those big females have to eat. So when something big and slow comes by, that gets their attention.”

> If he’s fishing shallow wood or grass that tops out about 2 feet below the surface, Lane will start cranking his spinnerbait as soon as it hits the water. When concentrating on brushpiles or other cover at depths of 8 to 10 feet, Lane lets his spinnerbait flutter down until it stops falling and then starts cranking just fast enough to feel the blade vibrating.

> He keeps his rod at the two o’clock position to help him feel the lure better and keep it off the bottom or out of the vegetation.

> Most strikes occur early or halfway through the presentation, but Lane recommends slow-rolling a spinnerbait until it reaches the boat. “Sometimes those lethargic males or females will follow that thing all the way to the boat,.”

> A cloudy day is Lane’s favorite time to slow roll a spinnerbait for prespawn bass.

Quote of the Day

When we would pull into a town and have a free afternoon, Duane and I would just go buy a couple fishing reels and plastic worms and go bass fishing.

Allman Bros drummer Butch Trucks talkin’ ’bout bassin’ with Duane Allman. Very cool. Blown away that they didn’t need any rods! Here’s Duane:

Those FL southern rock boys — the Allmans, Skynyrd — loved to bass-fish. Fact, RVZ in the tune “Don’t Ask Me No Questions,” said fishin’ was the only thing okay to talk about. #word

Long as we’re on the subject, here’s the Jax Attack — Blackfoot rippin’ thru “Fox Chase.” Their second home back in the day was NJ. Great. So loud you couldn’t think. Way it should be. Get those dang Oriental rugs off the stage…sheesh.

Shot of the Day
Pretty sure the bass at Beaver were fond of Randy Blaukat’s Megabass S Crank:
