Do You Have Megabass Cojones?

Or Hemingway Cojones?

You might think the story behind Megabass goes like this: Detail-obsessed Japanese angler starts bait company, baits look “realer than real,” work great, crazy success ensues.

In a way, you’d be right. But that description is missing one key detail that’s unique to Megabass and will be near and dear to the hearts of bassers everywhere. Here’s the abbreviated version, from the Megabass USA website:

Megabass made a name for itself by paying homage to the dueling tradition of the Wild West. The birth of Megabass in the U.S. is the stuff of legend, involving a cross-country trek in which the Megabass designer/CEO [Yuki Ito] challenged pro staff of local stores and area pros to one-on-one fishing duels.

The rules were simple: If Yuki Ito won, the store had to buy his lures. If the U.S. angler won, then Yuki had to buy some American tackle from the store.

This “put your money where your mouth is” approach, combined with the quality and flat out fish-catching ability that was evident in Yuki’s handcrafted Megabass tackle, succeeded in convincing stores to take on this premium imported [baits]. Thus the Megabass journey began.

Pretty cool, eh?

The Hemingway Thing

In the lore of fishing throw-downs, that might only be beat by one guy: Earnest Hemingway. Check this out, from a website somewhere:

In 1935 he won his first fishing competition at Bimini in the British West Indies. Foreigners were unpopular in Bimini, and Hemingway’s victory provoked a number of quarrels. He offered the opposing fishermen $200 to the man who could stay in the boxing ring with him for four rounds. No one won the money – Hemingway beat them all.

It wasn’t a bluff. Hemingway beat them all. Dang!

Win!
