Lame Prizes in Snakehead Kill Effort

The Maryland DNR wants to give you a popsicle stick and an orange if you catch and kill a Potomac River snakehead and post its ugly mug online. Alright, not that lame, but it sure as heck isn’t the serious bucks doled out in the West to get rid of squawfish (aka pikeminnows).

To entice anglers to get rid of snakeheads – angry-looking Asian foodfish – the MD DNR is giving away: a $200 rod and tackle package, a Maryland State Park Passport, and a 2012 Potomac River fishing license. In a year-end drawing!

Whoop-dee-doodlee-doo.

Hold on…I can’t finish typing this, need to gas up the Suburban to make it to the Potomac by morning….

I know state DNRs are hurting for cash, but COME ON!

One news report stated that this effort “is not expected to eradicate the fish, but biologists hope it can help slow population growth and reduce overall abundance.” I don’t know, man. For that to happen a lot of people would have to want a free park pass or whatever.

What a generous bunch they are. A rod/reel/tackle package that was likely donated to them, and two things that basically cost them nothing to give out other than the paper they’re printed on.

They are on the right track but it isn;t enough. They should start a tournament circuit like B.A.S.S. and call it S.N.A.K.E. or something. But instead of “Don’t kill your catch” have a “Kill your catch” theme and no creel limit, largest total weight wins. They could have a big snakehead fishfry at the end. I know the snakehead is a delicacy in Asian cultures. Maybe just make cat food or fertilizer if you can’t give the dead fish away. They should do the same with the asian flying carp… It’s so easy to fix this it’s called overfishing only we do it to the fish we don’t want.
