TODAY’s Top 3

1. KVD quits Elites.

Calls it too easy, refuses B.A.S.S.’s offer to rename the trail the Bassmaster KVD Elite Sexy Shad Series, presented by KVD and Bass Pro Shops.

2. Dave Mercer renounces Canadian citizenship.

Says people too nice there and taxes too low…. Dang straight, Dave, welcome aboard!

3. Andre Moore to rename all bait colors after Crayola colors.

The new Reaction Innovations says hello to “cornflower,” “antique brass” and “burnt sienna,” among others. Oddly, there is a Crayola color named “beaver.”

Andre had no comment on the change, but for a limited time will be giving out free kazoos.

Okay, now the “not April 1st” bassin’ top 3:

1. ‘Bass Professor’ Doug Hannon passes on.

Dang. Doug was a fixture on the bassin’ scene for a heck of a long time. Faded a bit from the main scene in recent years, but still part of it and well-known.

Doug was legit obsessed with bass, especially big ones. He started as a big-bass guide in Florida, and got known for his ability to fool 10+ lb bass. I believe as one of the first guys who scuba-dived (fdove?) with bass to learn their secrets, and also invented or co-developed many things for bassin’, including:

> A (or maybe “the”) weedless trolling motor prop

> The Catch and Release livewell additive

> 3D lake-bottom mapping

> Various baits, including a topwater (a snake bait, if I remember right)

> The WaveSpin reel and the new Microwave guides (more on those here)

He also was a consultant on various things including development of the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center.

In other words, Doug had a HUGE influence on bassin’, whether we realize it or not. RIP bassin’ brother!

2. Shin Fukae wins Douglas PAA with A-rig.

U-rig, whatever. This time it was a Megabass Spark Rig with 4″ Megabass Spark Shads.  Fellow FLW pro Andy Morgan finished 2nd with a u-rig too, as did Brandon Palaniuk in 3rd. Brandon summed it up pretty well:

> “When they’re eating that rig, you have to throw it to be competitive, so that’s what I stuck with.”

3. Horton’s almost 9 large, almost 7 smallie day.

Definitely worth mentioning, on day 1 of the Douglas PAA Tim Horton caught an 8.81 largie AND a smallie that almost went 7 lbs. Nice! Here’s the pic:

The largie was the big bass of the derby. Caught his big fish on, yep, an A-rig: a YUMbrella Flash Mob and Flash Mob Jr. Here it is, I’m diggin’ the two colors of grubs.

Getcha some YUM Bait School Technology here.

2. PA DEP finally ramps up Susquehanna smallie study.

80c apiece!

4. Fish the Ram Mega Bass!

It’s this weekend, April 7! A Dodge Ram truck and checks given out every hour, plus checks every hour down to 15th, plus fishing on Lake Fork!

Tip of the Day

Fishin’ the Spark.

If you’ve never fished an a-rig before, here’s a little bit about it. What’s cool is unless you know Japanese, you can just watch without getting distracted by the words.

Quote of the Day

If we had a high-school bass fishing team, I sure wouldn’t have cut classes when I went to high school.

Bass fishin’ writer John Neporadny joking (…maybe) about the possibility of high-school bassin’ in MO, his home state.

Shot of the Day

Strike King pro Mark Rose caught a 52.60-lb lake record striper at the Douglas PAA. Dang, fish were bitin’ on that lake!
