Hank Parker Jr?, New OK record, Viking gets ‘Trapped

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Today's Top 3

1. Hank Parker's 'kid' going pro?

37-yr-old Ben Parker:

> …gearing up to fish all three events of the Rayovac FLW Series Northern Division.

> "I really enjoy the family environment of FLW and I knew that it was the right place to start my career in tournament fishing because it feels like home.”

> "I have always wanted to fish (tournaments) full time. I love being competitive. Ultimately I want to be able to fish the FLW Tour, but time will tell for that."

Cool. Ben's dad is a tremendous guy imo. Also a guy unafraid to do whatever it took (within the rules!) to win. Will be interesting to see how Ben does.

2. OK: New Sooner Lake record.

Startin' to be record bass season – sweet! 11.4 caught on a Rogue:

> Roger Robinson caught the new monster bass while fishing Sooner Lake on Sunday. At 11.4 pounds the fish is 26.25" long and has a girth of 19.25".

> They made two passes along a break where the water dropped off from 10 down to 12 or 15 feet….

> "Our best five would have gone 38 to 40 pounds…was just one of those magical deals where every big bass in the lake turned on."

> On Sunday winds were pushing 30 mph…. "I know we were going into 6-foot rollers on the way back. We had us a very scary ride back. That was not fun at all."

3. Vikings' Robinson fishes 'Trap Open.

The Minnesota Vikes' Brian Robison – the hookset sack celebration dude – won a free rod for being the “angler that traveled the longest to fish” this weekend's Rat-L-Trap Open on Rayburn. Then he gave it to a youngster, very cool.

Dewey Day and Billy Waldrep won it with 5 for 20.48. Used a 1/2-oz Trap in chrome black zombie:

Next up: Gville this weekend:

Tip of the Day

Sonar: Finding not-obvious spots.

Good article, becuz everyone can see everything now, by FLWer Tom Redington:

> I spent hours graphing around large expanses of seemingly flat, featureless bottoms. Over the course of 3 days, I found some fish holding to spots in the middle of nowhere. While most of the field was fighting over the good-looking areas, I had three key spots all to myself and rode them to an 8th-place finish.

> Subtle contour changes or small pieces of cover regularly hold a school of fish, or at least a quick keeper. Some of my all-time best fishing spots are humps that slowly rise less than 3 feet in nearly 30 feet of water, or 1-foot deep ditches running through 8-foot flats.

> Go against the grain, figure out the fish and you’ll have virgin water the entire trip.

> In lakes with lots of rock and hard bottom, transitions from one type to another are bass magnets. Use your StructureScan to find changes in bottom hardness (harder bottoms appear brighter and thicker, often producing a second bottom return or “double echo”), and you can actually see what size rocks are on the bottom in the side view.

Quote of the Day

You can't bobble with these guys.

Dennis "TJ", talkin' 'bout makin' decisions:

> "The tournaments I did bad in, I did bad because I made bad decisions. That's the difference in the end."

> "I bobbled in one tournament and it cost me the Classic."

Snow Miser bobbles all the time:
