Is Guntersville Fixin’ to…Suck?

This is how Guntersville basses get so chubby....

Guntersville is so good that you can throw a Vienna sausage on a J-hook, make one cast and catch an 8-pounder.

Okay, maybe not that great, but that’s kind of it’s national rep. And it looks like some locals are now bent on trying to make that rep a thing of the past.

Below is more, but first let’s remember the Chickamauga debacle back in the ’90s, the bassin’ decline caused by the TVA spraying herbicides in the lake to get rid of exotic veggies like Eurasian milfoil and hydrilla. That in mind:

> A BassParader emailed us about “ongoing efforts by homeowners, businesses and tourism interests to help eradicate vegetation in Lake Guntersville.”

> According to this article, “state Rep. Wes Long has put together a group to do a study of what it would take to replace the lake weed control program along the private shorelines that TVA stopped doing last year. The group is called the W.E.T. (Water, Environment & Tourism) Foundation. It defines its mission as “dedicated to the preservation of the Lake Guntersville Reservoir, the protection and provision of clean, safe drinking water and the control of non-native and aggressive invasive aquatic vegetation in a manner conducive to a balanced ecosystem for ample fishing and the opportunity to sustain positive economic development and a sound tourism plan.”

> Some of you may know that 2 years ago TVA stopped its herbicide application program of private shorelines, although it still does some public areas. A group in Scottsboro, AL similar to the one above was successful in 2009 in getting Roseberry Creek – a major Guntersville tributary – “treated” for vegetation. The habitat loss and decline of fishing in that creek was immediate and still lingers.

Not…looking…good for bassin’ on one of the world’s best bass lakes if these folks get their way. Beware, bassin’ bros!

Some local Guntersville Anglers have bonded together with some local pros and guides to fight against the eradication of aquatic vegitation. We are the Lake Guntersville Association. Gunterville has survived incredible fishing pressure over the last several years. If they kill the grass, the tourism and quality of fish will rapidly decline. Look at Lake Seminole in the late 90s as another example like the Chickamauga debacle. I hope the association can prevent a Lake Guntersville Debacle!!

So what’s the bottom line about this? Is it basically a bunch of skiers and pleasure boaters whining about the weeds?

Basically, yes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if you ain’t of the bassin’ persuasion then you can’t appreciate the beauty of Eurasian…Milfoil that is!…Big Bama G…Bassin’ Gold! Hydrilla Mats on the Guntersville Flats is the place you oughta be! Sorry, couldn’t resist.

The sad/funny thing is you know they would sell a couple of pallets of those things even if it were just as a gag! I’m honestly surprised they haven’t made KVD shoes in Sexy Shad!

EVERY lake here in Texas that they have gotten rid of grass has lost its big bass/less bass. (Except Conroe, but it doesn’t kick out sharelunkers anymore). EVERY lake that has gotten grass in it HAS become a big bass lake (Ivie, Falcon, Amistad, and Fork of course). Most by drought where it stays low for a length of time and then returns to full pool where grass grows (vegitation).

Grass –> More Plankton –> More Forage –> More food for Bass –> Faster Growth –> Big Bass.
