Today’s Top 3

1. Next new thing in fishing: Gonads??

When you weight your plastic baits with The Gonad, you solve all sorts of problems.

– Line on thegonad.com, talkin’ ’bout a new type of bait weight.

All well and good, but this vid doesn’t sit well with me. How they rig the hook looks like it would hurt the hookset, but I’m assuming the Gonad fellers did their homework.

The whole (fish) biting gonads thing reminds me of eating Rocky Mountain oysters, a memory I just now realize I’d suppressed. Dang. Don’t they look…veiny.

2. WTHeck is Zell talking about??

He’s too old for what now?

3. MN no-cull rule about…walleyes.

Word is it was enacted to protect deep-caught walleyes. WALLYS. Captain caveman say: Wally no bass.

This is from the state that still allows pike spearing…and yet has so many fishing companies (Lindners, FLW, etc.). Do…not…get…it.

We posted an undercover fisherman near where the MN fisheries staffers and politicians stay on vacation, who took the following shots using a bobber stealth cam. They fo sho tell the story:

News

1. MD: Another spot win on the Potomac.

Recent EverStart. If you be lucky enough to find some grass with fish and no one around, ka-ching. Has happened plenty of times now, but still a surprise when it happens.

2. AL: Netting battle on TN River lakes?

3. IL: Dude wants to break 24-hr fish catch record.

> Johnny Wilkins, founder of the Chicago Fishing School, will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most fish caught by an angler in a 24 hour period…will take place July 5th, 2013, at 7:00 a.m. at Lake View Nature Center, Oak Brook Terrace, IL. Wilkins will fish from shore…trying to catch as many fish as possible in a single day with a single pole.

4. Vicious Fishing auto products.

Huh? I’m diggin’ the Bass Cat rims (Kevin Short’s below), but not sure if anything else in bassin’ makes a lotta sense auto-wise.

5. Plano pro gear giveaway.

6. Two new ‘boats’ I kinda like.

Not ‘zactly for bassin’, but:

> NuCanoe Frontier 12 – A canoe that’s a kayak that you can stand on, and mount an outboard and trolling motor on. Hmm.

> Creek Co. Osprey Fishing SUP – Used to look at stand-up paddleboard folks and laugh. But that was at the beach, where most were doing their best to be shark vittles. Other day I’m at the local lake, flat calm, and here’s this guy making pretty good progress paddling along on one, quiet as anything. So….

This new inflatable paddle board looks cool, but the part that gets me is “inflatable,” bass sometimes bein’ known to barf out a bait….

All buzzbaits are not created equal!

Tip of the Day

Power-dropshotting.

You guilty of thinking dropshotting is finesse only?

> Western pros Luke Clausen and Art Berry do not see it that way. Berry: “By beefing up tackle into the medium and heavy range, the drop-shot can be a total power technique in the shallows.” Clausen: “I fish a drop-shot on regular-duty tackle all the time, and it works great.”

> Both pros go to 7-foot medium-heavy casting tackle spooled with fluorocarbon in 12- to 17-pound-test. Their weight sizes will range from 1/4- to 3/8-ounce, depending on depth and water color. “I usually go with a 2/0 or 3/0 straight-shank superline hook,” Berry said.

> Powering up dropshot tackle allows anglers a wider selection of soft plastics. “Six- to 10-inch worms, Zoom Brush Hogs and Senkos are all fair game,” Berry said. “One of my favorite drop-shot setups is a Senko rigged on 12- or 15-pound line – it makes a great pitching bait for docks and sparse vegetation.”

> What’s the difference vs. T-rigging: “It’s the fall of the bait and the way it stops just inches off the bottom instead of plowing the bottom,” said Berry, who uses a 2- to 4-inch leader.

> Another big difference is that a dropshot allows the angler to give the bait action without actually moving the bait.
