Today’s Top 3

Will be at the Classic next week, in and out of the Classic War Room (video feed on Bassmaster.com). If you see me on there and have a Classic-related or Classic tackle show-related question, hit me up at bassblaster@bassgold.com and I’ll see if I can help out. Not sure about the Friday BassBlaster next week yet….

1. I tried other jerkbaits, but around the Ozarks and in Oklahoma I kept coming back to the fact that the Rogue just caught bigger fish.

Classic favorite Jason Christie on a jerkbait that, absent some apocalyptic weather, will for sure be used next week.

2. I’ll have at least 20 rods set up with different baits and techniques.

Brent Chapman talking about his Classic practice. Sounds like a plan…? Also said:

> My hope is to narrow down the bite to either bottom baits or moving baits. I’m sure there will be a combination of the two that are working, but for the most part one style will dominate.

> The biggest factor for me in deciding which technique to favor is water temperature. It ranges from 40 to 50 degrees, and that’s a big difference for determining the outcome of my fishing.

3. Record dinosaur caught from Grand.

Classic? Who needs the Classic when you’ve got fish like this! lol

Heather Fink fishing with guide Rusty Pritchard, 110.12 lbs, lake record spoonbill, beat old record by 30! Nose to tail was 71 inches, eye to tail was 52 inches, girth was 42 inches.

3. Win a new Berkley Skeeter.

4. Huge props for Casey Scanlon.

Tip of the Day

5-lb line deep?

Aaron Martens told me that he used 5-lb line when he dropshotted in the Green Bay Elite last year. If I remember right, he liked it for its sensitivity and felt he got more bites with it. I remember thinking that was pretty ballsy. I mean, he wasn’t just fishing for fun.

Then I’m watching Dave Mercer’s most recent Facts of Fishing show, and he and his guest “Big Red” were dropping spoons for Great Lakes smallies. Big Red was using 5-lb line because he felt it helped the spoon fall truer, meaning less bow in the line.

He was catching pigs on that 5-lb line.

So I give you that to think about the next time you’re fishing deep. Maybe go lighter than you’d normally go?

This also reminds me of David Dudley telling me how he used (and may still use) a crazy stiff telephone pole of a rod with pretty light line. Line for the bites, stiff rod for initial hook penetration.

Maybe we all need to be fishing lighter line?  (Mama…I’m skeered….)
