Today's Top 5

1. Fishing League Worldwide??

Seen on the FLW website:

Did I miss an announcement? What happened to "the" FLW:

2. TVA to resume Gville spraying.

Grass spraying. One perspective:

> The attitude among many local anglers is, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"…. "I'm in favor of weed control," says well-known Guntersville guide Mike Gerry, "so long as it doesn't turn into weed eradication. The right amount of weeds is essential to our business."

> Captain Mike Carter, who mostly fishes the middle and upper end of the lake: "If they limit the spraying to boat trails and docks and marinas and beaches, I don't think any of us would object, but if they kill a lot of the weeds in the prime fishing areas, that would be a concern."

Lookit that – ain't it beeyootiful?

T'other side:

> Rep. Wes Long of Guntersville posted the following statement on his Facebook page:  “Lake Guntersville is going to be 100% managed by TVA and paid for this year. There will be a partnership for moving forward with TVA and the stewardship of our lake to maintain the best fishery, and a recreational paradise for wakeboarding and skiing. Great news for Lake Guntersville."

> “Usually the weeds will get tangled up in the propellers,” said James Hughes, manager of the Lake Guntersville Yacht Club.  “They will get tangled up in the intakes off of jetskis. You have to get off and clean them out and everything."

That makes even less sense than Brandon Weeden's shovel pass thingy last season:

3. "Wish I was on that pro bass tour…"

Fave lines:
> Bet they don't even have to buy their own beer…
> Gonna scream like Iaconelli and outfish VanDam…

Couple clams in there like the "Wal-Mart Classic," but…here's the chorus: Wish I was on that pro bass tour (pro bass tour, pro bass tour).

4. Weird post-ice backwaters revealed.

Hmmmm. Wonder if this has anything to do with Brandon Palaniuk…or crop circles….

News

1. Faircloth gets Retirement National.

2. MN: New Mille Lacs smallie regs.

> The smallmouth bass harvest season will be extended and limits relaxed. The season will start May 10 and be exempted from the statewide catch-and-release regulation that begins in mid-September. This means anglers may harvest smallmouth bass from the opener until the last Sunday in February.

> Anglers may keep six fish, only one of which may be longer than 18". The previous regulation allowed anglers to keep six fish 17-20", only one of which could be longer than 20".

> “More liberal northern pike and smallmouth bass regulations speak to the fact these species can withstand additional pressure because their populations are at or near record highs."

Huh? These guys don't git it and I don't either:

3. IN: BP spills again…

…this time in Lake Michigan.

4. MS: Fees at Ross Barnett?

5. MN: Fish Leech Lake!

> Spring electrofishing surveys…in Boy, Headquarters, Steamboat and Shingobee bays. Thirty-six percent of bass sampled were 15” or longer.

> 30 percent of bluegills sampled were 8” or larger. The average size of black crappie sampled in the spring electrofishing survey was 10.3” with fish up to 15” observed.

6. AR: TBF HS Nationals.

At Dardanelle again, July 15-19.

7. AL: TBF HS winners.

8. Lunkerhunt Fillet.

Yep, spelled with two Ls. The point: feeding baitfish look.

9. Win a trip with Browning.

10. New pork from Uncle Josh.

11. Anglers send $325.7mm to states.

Tip of the Day

Ish Monroe: Squarebillin'.

> Monroe suggests winding one steadily around docks because you don’t have to make an exact cast underneath the dock and a fish will swim out and eat it. Or if you don’t really want to throw it right in the brush, if you can throw it around the brush, that’s good too. Around riprap is another excellent place for a novice to throw the squarebill crankbait.

> “It’s pretty easy because you don’t have to do anything special with it. You can throw it out there, you wind it, it comes back and it catches fish. Don’t wind it too fast, don’t wind it too slow, just wind at a normal pace and that’s where it excels for a novice.”

> Two of his favorite colors of his River2Sea Biggie series squarebills are Cold Blooded which is a black/red crawdad color and Da’ Heater which is a brown crawdad color and his overall favorite color.

> He throws his squarebills on a 7’2” Team Daiwa Tatula medium-action rod – basically something that’s going to be relatively light in action so that bass can inhale the bait. He uses Maxima fluorocarbon in 12 lb test.

Quote of the Day

…the poachers trek over a snake-infested ridge, carrying heavy scuba-diving gear before reaching their destination at Seal Island. With mobile phones sealed in condoms to keep out the water, they scan the ocean for patrol vessels and sharks before sliding into the deep.

From an article 'bout abalone poachers. Okay not bassin' but way too INSANE not to include. That Seal Island is the one in all the South African jumpin' great white vids! You ain't even gettin' me in a boat there, let alone in the water.

Lookit the size of that thing! (Click to see it way more awesome.)
