Today’s Top 5

1. A-rigs banned on FLW Tour.

FLW pros were sick of always having to have one tied on:

> FLW president Kathy Fennel: “The rigs have simply evolved to a point that we can no longer wait for state-enforced restrictions to be developed.”

> “Umbrella rigs will be permitted in our other tournament circuits, but with restrictions…to a maximum of five wires outfitted with a maximum of five spinners and five lures, only three of which can have hooks.”

> FLW pro Randall Tharp: “The biggest reason I didn’t like it was that it made a whole lot of other technologies [techniques?] obsolete and that’s not good for the sport.”

> “At Beaver Lake some people were throwing 20 baits on one rig. So where does it end?”

FLW also changed payouts so that places 21-60 now get $10K, top 10 get a little less.

2. ‘Recompression’ devices coming?

Now being used in saltwater to get released fish back down to their caught-from depth/pressure (wait…people release saltwater fish??). Who’s coming up with this stuff – MLF? (HAHA!)

3. Who the heck’s buying Mighty Bites??

Seen that infomercial bait yet? Guy who owns it says he’s seen 30% annual growth, is making “millions of dollars” and is now trying to get in Wally-Mart. If true, who’s buying that thing?????

That’s it, I’m getting into the infomerical biz. Here’s my prototype – who’s with me?

4. Elites! love! exclamation! points!

Either that or it’s relief about the season being over. To quote Phil Roberston: “Happy happy happy!”

Hold on…runnin’ out back to skip through some tulips….

5. Ricky Green fundraiser.

On a serious note, one of the sport’s legends needs a lung transplant. Host of big-name dudes – like Zona, Nixon, Cochran, Houston – are donating trips, lots of other folks helping too. Deets:

LIVE & SILENT AUCTION

Help a bassin’ brutha out if you can…and you can!

News

1. ‘Yoot’ lands new record MD bass.

> Colton Lambert, 12, caught a Maryland record largemouth while fishing at a farm pond in his hometown of Huntingtown on July 31. The fish was 11 pounds, 6 ounces, 26 inches long and 18 inches around.

> Lambert was fishing with his father and younger brother at approximately 7:30 p.m. when he thought his line was caught on something. “All of a sudden something started to move very quickly and broke the surface and took off, peeling line off the reel,” he said. “It was really hard to control and reel in – when I finally slid it up on the shallow bank, my dad started getting all excited.”

> It was weighed on the certified scale…. Lambert caught the fish using a spinning rod with 8-lb test line and a plastic worm, rigged weedless and without a weight.

> The previous record of 11-02 was held for nearly 30 years by Rodney Cockrell.

2. Detroit River BFL won on Erie.

Interesting with the Elites there too – 22-00 won it up by the Canada border, top 6 all had over 20.

3. Don’t forget to vote for the Elite All-Stars.

4. B.A.S.S.-ABA deal over.

Bassmaster Weekend Series done, sounds like some new Nation stuff coming.

5. NC: New structure in Lake James.

Tip of the Day

Koby Kreiger: Too much bait no good.

> Where bait is really thick, it’s hard to catch bass because they’re so keyed in to the baitfish. I’ll try to find somewhere that doesn’t have quite as much bait.

> You’d think that fishing where most of the bait is would be the best option, but if you find a place with less bait or no bait at all, you’ll catch more fish just because you have less competition to get their attention.

> A situation with a lot of bait in clear water is usually pretty hard to deal with. In dingier water, the fish might not be as homed in on the bait because they can’t see it as well.

Quote of the Day

I feel like I let myself and a lot of people down when I didn’t win the Classic.

Elite Series Rookie of the Year Hank “take it to the bank” Cherry.

May sound like crazy-talk to you, him bein’ a rookie and all, but not winning the Classic is a burden a lot of pros carry around. And just in case you think Hank is all about the jerkbait:

> “This year it’s a different lake, but it’s still a three-day tournament, cold water, clear water and there may be a jerkbait bite going on.”

Hahaha Cherry!
